Opinion on truck lights on the roof ?

Post by candymancan »

Was wondering. Wjat your guys opinions are of the amber truck lights on the roof of a J10 ? I like ligjts and doing wiring lol. And i was going to add some to my factory brush guard im fixing. And the rolkbar/light bar i built.

And i was thinking of doing something like this also. Took these pics from google.

J10 alt is already upgraded to a 90amp. So all i gatta do is setup a pdc relay and fuse boxs like i did on my 90gw. And start wiring things lol.

Also what do you think looks better.. two lights.. three.. 4 or more on the top ? What style.. round kc style or square/rectangle ?

I think Halogen whatever i get looks best though as they look more old school versus the leds. And whats your opinion on the amber offroading/or fog lamps.

I personally like them, and that exact style and configuration, for the older trucks. I am putting a set on my '84 GW, when I get to that point of the build.
Regarding power needs, the stock alternator/wiring should be more than adequate to handle adding these into the system, without thinking we need to flip the nuclear power switch to accomodate them.

I think 2 or 3 on the top would be cool and definitely keep the look retro, not too modern

They WILL leak. They whistle in the wind. Having an amber light shining on the hood really messes up a drivers night vision. The only reason my truck has them is they are filling the holes in the roof until I repaint.

Should not whistle as they are designed not to. Most streamlined should be ok, but some of those designed for slow farm trucks, might give a little tune at faster hiway speeds. Put them on and go, as you can change style, if first ones don't work out.

I like them as they have a practical benefit of making your vehicle more visible, especially at night. The cab clearance lights I installed on my J20 don’t leak, whistle or interfere with my vision. I believe I got them from Grainger.

There is a specification for the location of these lights. A fellow I worked with had this information and shared it with me but that was two decades ago.
I used to name my FSJ’s after their previous owners, I realized I had too many with five named Rick.

Dang raccoons again!

Rust is a color too.

I would think you could mount them how you want, as any spec sheet would probably be relative to the brand of vehicle as built, and would vary across different markets. Myself I like the 2 on the outside, with center 3 closer together as shown in first pics above, but could space them evenly. Or only mount 4, or 3.....many ways to do these. Have seen the visors with built in lights too, I think mid 90's Chevy or something like that, and looked about the same size as the J trucks and Wagoneers.

Think what ima do is get my lights on my rollbar/light bar i made first. Then ill buy a set or two of the cab ligjts.. and ill jist sit em on the roof wired up to a battery temporary and see what it looks like. Before i comit to it. Ive just always kinds liked cab mounts when i see em on other peoples fords or what not.

Dont want the cab lights to look off with the roll bar lights. Also finished psinting my brush gusrd awhile ago and putting lights on it too.

I only got 28.5 inch tires on though, basic 235/75/15s. That i got just to get the truck rolling when i rebuilt it. Plan to put either 31 or 33s on. Probably 31s. I know 33s will fit. But ive seen some pics of a stock j10 with 33s and it may fit. But it looks too large without say a 2 inch lift. Not sure yet. Plus i use this thing a lot with heavy loads had 2k lbs in the back a few times already snd i dont want 33s to go inside my wheel wells snd dmg thr truck lol

I think my wagoneers spare steel tire will mount on my J10 wont it ? havent checked its bolt pattern. It has my 31 inch mastercraft mxt on it. So i can put that on the front / rear and photochop it into one picture to see what itll look like.

235's, if LT's, should have a slightly higher load rating than 31's. That was reasoning using them on my GW, and quiter on the long hiway trips I plan to take with it. Running them at 35 psi for a driver, but when time to hook up and tow, I can go up to 51 psi.

Oh these are just plain old cheap good year wrangler radials the 80$ tires from the 80s they still make today. Yea my mastercraft mxts vibrate a lot on my 90 i do kinda hate it actually it drives me nuts sometimes, the tread vibrates the Jeep especially with em worn down 50% now. they werent like that new

The radials load index rating is 105, the mxt are 109. the MXT has a higher load rating, and its a 10 ply tire, the radials are 2 ply. TBH i dont have the time or patience for two sets of tires when i got 4 Jeeps to work on all the time

Ive never seen a LT tire rating much above 105 tbh, most are all 105, 110 is the highest so the 31s being 109 is near the highest load rating you can get

If i got new tires, id probably just sell these to a used tire place, maybe... Or i guess keep em in case lol ?

in walmart the other day the Goodyear Wrangler Authority A/T looks like a really nice A/T tire, tbh i thought it was a mud terrain at first, deff doesnt look anything like other A/Ts ive seen, and theyre 30$ cheaper per tire too. I gatta get new tires first for the 5.9 ZJ, its got 8 year old 235 cooper AT3s on.. Got near 90k miles on these things... my mom got 120k on hers... insaine.

I think the ZJ even with a 4 inch lift max tire size is about 30/31.. Stock max is 30.. sucks having 3/4 Jeeps i wanna turn the 3 i own all into sporty off-roading lifted Jeeps so i cant just focus money on one haha

Yep mine are just LT radials at 6 ply, but for hauling would sure go to the 10 ply for capability. Never know when you will have 2-4k load to move.

So here is what ima do.. I finally found the Rectangle 7 inch offroad halogens on ebay. exactly like the rectangle twister Jeep lights. I see tons of old school pics fro mthe 70s of these things on the truck too from back in the day. Not many round lights like ppl do today but lots of rectangle.

So i think ima go with 2 of them on top, MAYBE 4, but i cant find any yellow ones, whatever is left is NOS clear on ebay. Think ima go with regular yellow rectangle 6 inch 55w ones on the lower part of the brush guard, and two more larger rectangles on mid brush guard. The top 2 maybe 4 im not sure if i should keep all 4 clear, or try the stained glass paint/clear combo on them to make 2 yellow..

Gonna look sick i think.. Ill post pics when i order the lights and stuff.

Btw what is the function of the light behind the cabin in the back ? Is that what todays trucks have when you open the door to illuminate the bed ? Mine is missing so im just curious
