Stupid question about wheels.. center hole size..

Post by jpswapmohn »

I should be able to figure this out, but dont seem to be finding the secret..
The center hole on wheels on the late model D44’s needs to be 4.25-4.5” to clear the front hub (maybe wrong term).
When searching for wheels, I dont seem to be able to figure out how to identify the center hole size on various rims. I want to go to 17” (maybe 18, but not larger) based on the availability of tires. I know the 6x5.5 lug spacing is same on older chevy/yota/etc. rims, but I dont want to order wheels only to find out the center whole is too small. I have already gone to look at some only to realize the whole is too small.

Is there something I can put in the search that would pull up the right wheels?
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

The 6 lug hub pilot (center hole) should be 3.44”. The early model 5 lug FSJ and CJ stuff was 4.25”. Anything that fits an 85 Chevy, k10, k5 or Toyota 4x4 will fit. Toyota, Nissan ect all use the 4.25” pilot.

I’m on the same quest. Really wishing I had done my truck in 6 lug instead of 5 lug. The wheel selection for 6 lug is almost unlimited, for 5 lug not so much.
The bus I ride is so short it is a yellow Smart Car full of squirrels, monkeys and clowns.

The issue is that nothing has used the same center bore since '91 (For both GM and Jeep). Toyota's use a 106.1mm center bore (4.177"). So yes, they will clear the hub. But it means you then need to run hub centric rings unless you like dealing with vibrations. Hub centric rings do work, I ran them on my old JK.

The other important thing is to be aware of wheel backspacing. Most 17 and 18 inch wheels have 4.5-5.25" of back spacing. Which is more than what any FSJ came with. So it may result in not clearing the TRE, or rubbing the front leaf springs when you turn. And on a J-Truck, they likely won't bolt up in back because of spring clearance.
