Heated choke keeps sticking.

Post by candymancan »

So the 2150 on my 76 J10 the choke is always sticking. It opens only partially. And never closes when it is. I always gatta tap the arm on it to close it when its cold so it starts without stalling.

And i gatta manually open it fully when its finnally on or warmed up after a min or two. Itll open maybe 30% then get stuck.

It feels very stiff when i do that too. The heated tubes on it had to be repaired back on the intake. But that isnt the issue as it wont close back fully either as i mentioned.

What can i do to fix this ? Ive tried lubricating the arm but no go.

If it were physically binding, I'd lift the carburetor off and look closely at the bench. Not difficult, and good to be practiced at that with carbureted cars. Take it apart until you find what's binding. Not much to suggest other than examine closely to find what's binding. No shortcut, sorry.

Looks like a '76 has the hot air connection by itself to open the choke. Your choke cover should not have an electrical terminal.

Another possibility is to switch to a manual choke. The Dorman kit for this works ok IME. Not perfect, but ok. Ca $15 at the parts store or Amazon. May be acceptable for a work truck that only you drive. https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-26320- ... in=keyword

Another option -

Long ago (1980?) I combined parts from a 292 Ford truck Holley 2V with my Motorcraft 4100 on a passenger car 352 to convert to a manual choke. This was nice because my F100 came with a manual choke (and this passenger car engine), and the actual manual choke fast idle cam is a ramp instead of stepped. Engine speed could be adjusted to match the amount of choke, and you did not need to blip the throttle to come off fast idle. The Holley and Motorcraft carbs are similar in design, and - surprisingly - the Holley parts fit.

You might be able to use the Holley manual choke kit they sell for their carburetors, or even the Holley electric choke kit. This might work - seems unlikely that the Holley manual choke will bolt up to the 2150, but they might. BTDT.
