Source for wider sway bar?

Post by will e »

Due to some modifications my stock sway bar has some interference issues. I need one wider.

Is the J20 sway bar wider than the J10/Wagoneer?

Other than going to a bone yard, which is what I will do next, anyone know a model sway bar that is an inch or two wider?

J10 and J20 have nearly the same track. Wagoneer is narrower. The Cherokee WT uses the same part as the J10; J20 is a different part number, but probably just heavier due to higher unsprung weight? Frame and spring width is the same, J20 link bracket and cushion are different.

How about cut it in the middle and connect with a sleeve? A pro welding shop could make a plenty strong joint, I'd think.

Yeahbut the sway bar is a spring. I don't think a weld in the middle would be a good idea. Probably bend on the first corner.

To my knowledge, every FSJ sway bar is the same width. The difference in part numbers is how thick they are.

You can always go with an anti-rock. You can get those in a wide array of widths. And you can adjust how stiff they are with various arm lengths.

May a sway bar from a late 80-90's Ford will work. Their frame got a bit wider when the bullnose trucks came out. But I am not sure what shape they are. Some sway bar have some pretty crazy bends in them.

Maybe a JK or JL sway bar would work? The JL sway bar is 40" wide I believe.

Will E if you want to measure your sway bar (since my J-10 doesn't have one) and I can measure my JK for you to see if it will fit?

That would be great if you'd measure the JK. I cannot find that info on line.

My sway bar is 36 3/4 from the inside to inside. And front to back is about 8".

I measured the sway bar on my JK, by myself, so its not exact. But inside measurement looks like just under 36" or so.

A JL Rubicon sway bar is wider (Rubicons have wider axles). And I have a friend with a JL, but he is out of town right now.

Thanks Stuka, my buddy has a JL rubi and I am hiking with him tomorrow. I already have a rug and tape measure loaded in the truck!

I found a video where a guy swapped a JK Rubi electronic to a JL sport. The two sway bars were the same measurements. About 8:50 is this video he has them side by side.

Frankly, it also looks like the ends are much longer than our jeeps. I measured mine at about 8".

If the mounting holes for the links were just about 1/2" farther out I could make mine work.

Can't heat it to bend it. Any thoughts?

Heating to bend is bad, they are tempered. I’d rather see you cut it in the middle then sleeve and bolt it together.

It’s a spring. If you heat it, it will lose its tension.

Sorry, I wrote that poorly. Yes, won't heat it to bend it.

Any thoughts on how to bend it just a bit? Farmer jack? Tubing Bender?

Bending it would be tough, because its spring steel. Its literally designed to bend all the time, and then return to its shape.

The one thing that this thread taught me... I am probably going to install a JK sway bar on my J-10 since I can't get an original one

I think I came up with an alternative. I am going to attach a hiem joint onto the stud on my quick release links. I will attach another to the sway bar itself. I think a tie rod end would work better but I will toss a washer on either side of the sway bar hiem joint. I'll attach the two. This will move the assembly just far enough away. I'll take a picture and post it. I have the hiem joints already so we'll see how it hooks up.
