Still around..new rim and tire question 285/70r17 on lifted WT Chero)

Post by Gambler »

Sup dudes, still kickin' and Sundog is still rolling (since 2007!)
Currently pulling the trigger on a LONG overdue upgrade on the tires and rims (yeah, been running 2004 era 33" Wild Country MTs on steel d window wide 15" rims).

What I'm looking at:
https://www.roughcountry.com/black-stee ... nQEALw_wcB

17", 3.75BS, 4.25 bore they look right! 377 to my door, and 285/70r17 { 33.1 diameter, 11.7 width} mud terrains are EASY and CHEAP to find used around here with all the oilfield trucks and wheelers. Can pick up nice usuable sets all day long for 200-400 bucks on FB or CL.

I've been pricing out replacement 33x12.50r15 sets all over the place..cheap china ones are 800 before mounting, any real brands are 1110-1400. I can really argue with myself on it, seems the perfect time to upgrade rim size for whatever future there is. I'm never selling it so..

Sundog is a 79 wide track Cherokee with a 4" lift, all spring front, 2"=2" rear spring and block, hasn't sagged a bit, for those that remember us :D

Anyone running this rim and tire combo? Everything fit ok? I don't rockcrawl or wheel anything hard anymore with it, so okay with losing some sidewall and cushy ride that the 15's give.

No reason to not run them, I’d be running that size if I could find a wheel that calls to me and fits as much as my current aluminum slots do. That wheel size should work just fine.

I ran the Pro Comp branded 17x8 steelies on my old JK (round window instead of D window). They are mostly all made by the same company.

The only issue I had with them is that they were lug centric instead of hub centric. So I had to run hub-centric rings to keep the speed related vibrations away. But they held up well. I eventually had to get rid of them because they had too much rock rash on them. But I was to go back to steelies, I would not hesitate to run them again.

The BS and bore size should work fine for you.

Do be aware that the VAST majority of 285/70r17 tires are E rated. So your ride will become more firm. On my current JKU I have to run them at 28-30psi to ride acceptably.

I ended up getting four Mastercraft Courser MXT 33x12.50r15 off amazon..925 shipped to my door by UPS (amazingly undamaged. Another 98 bucks for a perfect mount and balance...gotta say I was impressed with the road manners besides braking heavy :P (drunken dodging whale). Really quiet considering the big lugs. It's not nor ever will be a DD so I'm hoping these last a while, it was down to these and the Milestar Patagonias, and people had too many complaints about the Pats and literally none about these MXTs, so I gambled on em! 15" rim for life! They look good with wide 10" steel rims.

I ran a set of the MXT’s in 37” on my bronco and really liked them and may be my next choice for my J Truck.

I’ve watched a lot of rigs running the Patagonia tires, not impressed by anything other than they are least expensive out the door.

On the Patagonias...watch the Morrvair crawl up a rock and then watch the FJ at Fab Rats crawl up the same rock...the Patagonias just aren't sticky.

Milestar is doing a great job marketing their tires. They are even getting a lot of press with people using them. still doesn't make a great tire, but is great for 90% of their target audience, there is a reason you don't see anyone competing on them. I won't get into Matt and the Morrvair, nice guy and entertaining but there are a multitude of reasons he struggles sometimes unnecessarily.

IMHO the OP made a great choice with the Mastercraft MXT's.
