Fan shroud and clutch fan??

I got a 1982 Cherokee with the 258, it did not come with a clutch on the fan (4 blade fan bolted directly on) and there was no fan shroud on her when I bought her... Questions;

1. Should I have a clutch fan or were they built without them?
2. Should it have a fan shroud? I looked on several places like rock-auto ect. and can not find a replacement fan shroud for an 82' 258.
3. If they do make a shroud, anyone know where I could find/buy one outside of a junk yard? FSJ's don't survive in Indiana junk yards for long.

Thanks!

Jeff

Don't know about the clutch, but shrouds do help greatly.

And...I have a 6 cyl shroud. Unfortunately I'm in Colorado.

Yes, that engine should have a fan clutch. They're still available at parts stores/sites.

It should have a fan shroud but the only new ones available, that I know of, are very expensive aftermarket ones. BJs Off Road has them, maybe other places too. As far as junk yards for FSJs go, I have heard of a few but never purchased anything from them:

Fairly certain a 6cyl fan shroud will be a unicorn and not aware of anyone making new aftermarket.

I wouldn't consider this real advice, but I ran my truck without a shroud (stock clutch fan, though) for a very long time with no overheating. The 258s do not generate nearly as much heat as the V8s do.

You could also convert to an electric fan. Plenty of people on both sides of the fence for that one. I've been running a Contour fan for a couple years now, and have been happy with it. There's a couple threads around about that one and the Taurus fan.

Jeep had a heavy duty cooling option in this era that included a 7-blade fan with clutch and a fan shroud. I expect what you have is correct for your Jeep. My bare-bones J10 has the same equipment. If you want the optional equipment. I agree with Tony, no one will have a 6-cylinder fan shroud. However, I recall the CJ-5 radiator is the same width as the 6-cyl FSJs and the fan shroud will be pretty close. You could probably make it work. If you are handy, there are articles on the web that show you how to make your own fan shroud from fabric and fiberglass resin.

In my post above, sorry, I forgot that the aftermarket shroud I saw was for the AMC V8, not the 258-6 cyl. I also didn't realize 258s were available without a shroud, but now that I think about it, my first Wag, an 82 with the 258 didn't have a shroud and I admit I assumed that I thought it was missing. Like Cecil mentions, I also never had any overheating trouble with that 258 and no shroud. Anyway, not trying to steer you wrong - I honestly thought they were supposed to have shrouds. :)

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I'll add the clutch to the fan and check some of the places mentioned and try and pick up a used shroud, or try one from a CJ with the same engine? It might have come w/o them but I think I'll just feel better if I add them to be safe.

Thanks!

Your main issue will be the different radiator width between the V8s and 258. The FSJ 258 radiator is the same width as the CJ radiator IIRC, and the V8 radiator is wider. Pretty sure the CJ is the same, six or V8.
