Re: Building a Wide Track Wagoneer.. Finally!

Post by jpswapmohn »

I am using grade 8 metric bolts/nuts because the hardware store didn't have enough of the standard bolts. I used 3 washers between the seat bottom and the plates to get space for the stuff that is a little below the seat rails and to give room for the tops of the bolts that will go from plate to the Corbeau brackets (set on the bars for reference). I will center the brackets on the bars. (I will use lock washers when final assembly)

https://imgbox.com/NH9uyqKS

https://imgbox.com/KgxBLO7A
(Not sure why the bracket is narrower on one side)

https://imgbox.com/yBBst8xY

I used 12mm x 25mm bolts for seat-to-flat plates. I am using 10mm x 25mm bolts to mount plates to brackets, 3 down each side.
(more to come)

Those images are gigantic!

Nice looking brackets though. 80's FSJs are a great mix of SAE and Metric, so you are just keeping with that theme :P

I linked the photos because I couldn't figure out how to make the photos smaller to embed them in the post. They are quite large.

Building a Wide Track Wagoneer.. Finally!

Post by jpswapmohn »

A small thing, I know… but after all these years, I will finally have the GC seats in my rig! I should have ordered these brackets years ago..

Not sure pics came through, but the short leg on passenger side front on the trans tunnel is the one I am most concerned about. Not much clearance there.

Photos loaded fine :)

That passenger front left bolt is tight. The nuts will probably be buried in the carpet, but should clear.

I think I know why folks tend toward simpler seats from slightly older rigs, or manual seats..

My seats are from an ‘09 Overland GC. Top of the line..of course. 8v)

Well, the Overland came with Driver and passenger seat memory, mirror memory, heated seats front and rear…and even the freakin pedals adjusted based on the seat position. Some of you already know where this goes: CANBus

The memory module for everything is integrated into the drivers seat harness. The heated function module (apparently more than just seats?) is in the passenger seat harness.

I couldn’t find 09 diagrams but did find 05 schematics and figured at least the wire color code would be same..Nope!

I als assumed I could hook the CANBus + to 12V+ and the - to ground and it would be good to go.. Nope!
(You electronics folks are probably getting as big a kick out of this as my MSEE son did over the phone)

So, I got this..I will strip the harness and just wire the motors w/o all that other crap.. but that requires a different controller from a lower end GC of same year because the current one is only feeding thru the memory module where the simpler one actually runs 12v to the motors (at least I believe it does..we will see).

So back to the junk yard to find that controller.

No, I bought the Corbeau brackets for their seats, but removed the sliders.. so probably made by same folks.

Dumbed the seat wiring down and have full mechanical function. I will have to get an aftermarket switches, relays, etc. for the seat heaters.

The “extras”:
Image

Here’s a shot of the seats, minus headrests. They will eventually get recovered when I do interior, but will do well as is for now. Airbags are still in there but wires removed. I can’t think of an event that would cause them to deploy. May remove when it’s upholstery time.

Image

I am playing around with the idea of putting GC rear seat foam in the stock rear seat frame to tie the seats together. It is probably easier to just have a upholstery shop modify rear seat foam and cover design when they do all the seats, etc. Someday, right?

Now that I am crawling around the GW again, I am back to figuring out how to add a roll bar that doesn’t take up too much interior space and allows for headliner, etc. Not looking to do a cage for King of Hammers, just something to prevent it from folding at the shoulder in a roll-over. No way am I cutting the dash..

You are going to use the headrests, yes?

Thanks for all the under-of-the-seat photos. Very helpful.

I will be using the headrests. They are out in the back of the jeep, just didn't bring them in while working on the seats.

Seats are installed!
I will worn that the driver seat Corbeau bracket required a little modification on my 88 floorboard. The inside front leg is too long. It measures the same as the outside front leg (~3 5/8”). On my rig (pretty sure same at least 86-91), that leg needs to be 2 1/4” high.

I was able to apply a little heat and a brass hammer to straighten the bend in that leg and then a large vise, more heat, and brass hammer to bend at proper length.

Assessment: the seats sit pretty tall. Sitting in driver seat with it as low as I can get it, my head is about 1.5” from the roof support that runs across over the front seats (no headliner yet..).

I could find a method to lower the driver seat by cutting down the bracket legs, but would have to use that brass hammer to create clearance right where the original transfer case shifter came through the floorboard.

The passenger seat is not as adjustable as the drivers, and can’t lower using seat adjustment. I can’t really see a way to lower the passenger seat using this bracket and the original seat mount holes in the floor.

The brackets are tight against the trans tunnel. Some hammer work there could provide a little relief, but not much with t-case under there.

All in all, the seats function and are secure in the rig. I may have to play around a bit to try to get the seats down an inch is so.

This is the measure of the front inner leg.

Image
Not much clearance for the front inner passenger mount up on the trans tunnel. Cut the stud to just clear the nut.

Passenger seat…a little tall

They look pretty good. You're head's above the rests??? In that picher through the windshield even the passenger seat doesn't look that close to the roof.

I used Lexus seats. The backs are taller than stock and I was going to cut the frames and headrests down before having them reupholstered but after them being installed for a while I'm used to them so I don't think I'll bother. They're currently plenty tall for my 6' son and I think a 6'3" feller would still be safe even if I took 3" off the seats and another 3" off the headrests and pulled them out a few inches.

That's a great idea! There isn't enough padding in the seat to take any out. I had o recline the seats all the way to get the head rests on.

This may be the slowest build in the forum, but I kinda doubt it..

Baby steps… and then major leaps!

Today is the later. An L8T/6L90 with 23,000 miles on it is on its way to a shop in CO from TX.

A plan has been hashed out, parts are starting to be accumulated.

It won’t be a budget build, but I gave up on that when I emptied my checking account at Page Customs for the body and paint work..

Plan:
1. L8T/6L90 with a mid-range tune to ~500hp but I am more interested in low/midrange torque.
https://imgbox.com/g/H9HcS74bFb

2. I will keep the NP242 that I built with Tom Woods 32-spline shaft and SYE (the AWD to s nice for ice/snow conditions).

3. Swap the Grizzly out of the D60 for a TruTrack to match the front

4. 2” Rollbar/cage as unintrusive to the cabin as possible but effective in event of an accident (Not going rock crawling nor racing NASCAR..)

5. With a little luck, I will get the interior redone and the underside of the body protected.

Here we go…again

Welcome to the L8T club :-) A lot to love about this engine. Doesn't have all the aftermarket support that other Gen V engines do but feel free to ping me if you're struggling to find something. I've found a few good sources. May not be able to help but happy to try. cheers.
