Full Size Jeep Network

Jeep did great towing but stopping felt kinda weak. Brakes work fine without the boat but when towing didnt seem to quite cut it. Nothing major just seemed weak and locked up really easy when I tested hard braking. If I had to hit em hard might have some problems.


Daughter did fine though. Caught her first fish!

Does the trailer not have any brakes? It should have at least surge brakes.

It has no trailer brakes.

I've had it for 9 years and always towed it with my 97 grand Cherokee 318 and always thought it stopped fast enough adequately.

I figured the GW is heavier and wouldn't have any problem.

Time for hydroboost!

That is a nice fish for the first one. Hydroboost? Change out all the lines?

Grand cherokee has disk rear brakes. although they are tiny disc brakes I never understood why they put small brakes like that in rear.

As for heavier. My 5.9 Zj weighs 4300 lbs which is about the same a my 90 Gw so it depends what trim and year your Zj is. Laredos weighs like 3800 lbs.

I'm not sure if trailer brakes will work as I use it mostly for saltwater and I'm thinking they may seize.

I'll research hydro boost and the change out all the lines methods.

Although I'm intermediately proficient with brakes, I know very little about trailer brakes and nothing about hydro boost.

Hydroboost doesn't improve you're braking on it's own, you'll still need a properly working system. If your brakes are inadequate or ineffective they'll still be that way after adding a hydroboost unit.

We have used trailer brakes on campers and boats for years. No issues, as long as you PM then regularly. Salt is not friendly, but is manageable if you follow the PM schedule. Rinse the trailer when you get out of the salt water, and the like.
You won't be disappointed!

Hydroboost won't do anything here. The brakes locking up is a result of them getting too hot. There is really only three ways to fix this.

1: Brake pads that are rated for higher temps
2: slotted rotors
3: larger rotors with bigger calipers.

I'm really testing it like emergency stop testing, and it's locking up as it should on a very steep hill on a gravel road because of the weight of the boat pushing it. When I brake it hard on the asphalt it stops but just not as fast as i think it should or would like when towing the boat.

I got a set of brembo brake setup off an 09 SRT8 Charger with drilled and slotted rotors and 4 piston calipers. I was told they wouldn't work.
Maybe I could trade for Jeep ones or something.
