Took the head off yesterday and found how beautiful the pistons rings and head are.

That picture did not come through....

Dang it, I was trying imgur since Photobucket went crazy. But apparently I need to learn how to use it lol.


After comparing prices, it's the same price to get one from the junkyard as it is to do an at home rebuild.

So what would be better to fix all the issues with the current one, or to get one from a scrap yard that I'm unsure of?

Without seeing the picture or knowing for sure what's up with yours...I would still rebuild my own. Odds are you're going to end up rebuilding a junkyard unit anyway.

If the cylinder walls in your motor are not scored heavily, you can get away with a bore and new pistons worst case. I would definitely have the head professionally done. You don't have to go super expensive, but have a machinist check everything over. Might want to get it magnafluxed to be sure there are no cracks, and definitely get a valve job.

I would throw a mild cam in it, while you've got it all apart. Gaskets, bearings, and a timing set, and you'll have a pretty much new motor.

Any 4.0 engine after 98 is pretty much almost going to have cracked heads... They changed how the heads were forge after 98 and the 4.0 engine was kinda junky after because of that.

I should note that the coolant on the pistons spilled out while removing the head, not from a blown head gasket.




I found an M715 in my area that I really want for it a really good price (missing the starter) Once I get this sucker running I may sell it and buy the M715, and a 12 volt 242 starter and have an m715 for 1/3 of the normal price.

Plenty of sludge, could definitely use a thorough cleaning. I don't see anything blatantly wrong, though.

I didn't notice it, but my father in law just pointed out a bent valve, however if I was going to replace them anyways...

No real point in replacing them all, unless you just like spending money. Have a machinist go over everything, they can tell you which ones *need* replacing and which ones just need to be reconditioned. You're not building a race car, right?

I was just going to order all new valves because they aren't that much and I already have the engine apart.


Well this one's not a race car, however the electric motor I am ordering will be part of one.

So I drained the oil today to get ready to take off the pan and remove the crank.

According to jeep it should have 6 quarts of oil. I drained my 7 quart pain 4.5 times.


It doesn't burn quite as good a straight gas....but pretty close.

Maybe you just have that rare "high capacity" cooling 4.0??

Well after months of stress and many obscenities, someone has offered me a 68 camaro as a trade for the POS, so I'm gonna go with that route.

The value of a 68 camaro is way more than a CJ5. What’s the catch?

The body is completely disassembled and all on the new body panels are in boxes. Only after ordering the new panels, and cutting off the old ones did the guy realize he doesn't know how to weld to install the new ones. (It also sounds like his wife wasn't in love with the car either) it also has no engine or trans (which I view as both a plus and a minus. On one hand it won't be numbers matching, on the other hand it's not numbers matching so I don't have to feel bad throwing a BBC or LS in it.)


And my favorite feature. The guy that owned it before the guy I'm getting it from had a cage that meets all NHRA standards installed.

As much as Id love to go crazy and drop a 632 BBC in the thing, i doubt my bank account or wife would allow that. So what do you think I should put in it? Im stuck between the classic 350 and 454, or a modern 8100, or LS series engine. As far as Trans go Ive narrowed it down to either a TH350/400 for beating the snot out of at a track, and a T56 for general driving pleasure.

I would never put an iron big block into a camaro, ruins the cars driving dynamics.

If you just want a good driving vehicle, find a 5.3L from a junk yard and put that in. You don't have to worry about ruining the car since it is just a shell.

There's an SUV with an LH6 at the local yard, should I snatch it while its still there?

Also even though its an iron block would a 6.0 iron block be better than the 5.3 aluminium since its only 70 pounds heavier, has a better after market, its way more readily available at junkyards, and has a bit more cubes to play with?
