Great find. I'd love to find one like it myself.

Brakes are all done. Have to redo them though! These are re-lined shoes, and the linings are too thick. Can't get the drums on. Bought a replacement pair from Autozone. I know they where only $20, but they where still awful. Worst looking shoes I've seen. So I ordered some Wagner ThermoQuiets from Rock Auto. Got them in today and they look great. Also got the new master cylinder in, along with all new brake lines to the junction block, and to the left and right front brakes.

Drums are in great shape.

Been meaning to update here for a while. Have gotten some stuff done over the last couple of months.

-Made a new front ebrake cable. Used one from a 1994 C3500 HD.
-Blasted, painted, rebuilt and installed the parking brake drum assembly. Got new shoes and springs from Herms.
-New rear output seal for the D20.
-New fuel lines, feed and return all the way to the tank.
-Had a pair of correct for '68 exhaust manifolds surfaced. They are painted and installed. Also fitted up a home made Y-pipe and a near new Ford muffler from an F350 351/2bbl I had kicking around. Nice and quiet now. Exhaust dumps in front of RR tires.
-Re-did the front shoes, again. Finally found a pair that fits correctly.
-Blasted, painted and installed a pair of correct for '68 valve covers and the correct hot air tube to feed my 2bbl air cleaner.
-New tranny mount.
-New T-case torque arm/bushings
-Replaced the grille with a much nicer one.
-Replaced the carrier bearing for the rear drive shaft.
-Installed the rear shocks.
-Made a new rear brake line and installed a new rear hose. Just need to do the rear brakes and the lines across the axle now.
-Replaced my bent nail ignition switch with another one that I had re-keyed to take a very clean original Kaiser Jeep key I had kicking around.
-Installed a used pair of dual note horns from a late 68 J3000 and an NOS horn relay. Low note horn is bad and the relay is stuck. Great success!
-Hooked up the parking brake. Needs to wear in, but it holds well enough to pass inspection.
-Rear drums turned .030"
-Fixed up rear leaf springs, new u-bolts and center pins.
-Went through the rear springs. Removed two add-a-leafs from each pack, needle scaled all the rust and crud from in between the leafs, coated them mating surfaces with dry film lube and reassembled with new u-bolts and center pins. Still need to cut the pins down. Also all new grease fittings. You can see how well they came out in the before and after pics.
-Installed a pair of WORKING Jeep dual note horns and a new Napa relay. Nice loud horns now.
-Replaced all the zinc coated hardware that came with my mirrors with all stainless. To the tune of $54!
-Rebuilt the washer pump. Squirters work well now.
-Blasted, painted and re-installed the rear diff cover, bolts and tags.
-Bought a new gas tank, sending unit and straps from BJ's.
-Changed rear diff, tranny and t-case fluid.

You can see the repop vent hose from the valve cover. It's for a 4bbl, hoping I can make it work on my 2bbl air cleaner when I get that swapped on.

Image
Terrible quality pic of the t-case brake.

Image
Blasted and painted 68/9 correct 2bbl pre-heater tube.

Image
"New" grille. I cleaned the right half. Still need to clean the left half.

Image
Someone reused the original bolts. Probably the company that converted it to a camper. Very little thread engagement.

Image
Nasty gaps in the leafs and I can't get bolts through the rebound clips.

Image
Nasty in general.

Image
Much better.

Image
No gaps. I still need to install the spacers for the bolts for the rebound clips. I had some cut from stainless tubing.

Image
Stock size tiny 1/2" u-bolts.

Image
Beefy Dana 70 Power-Loc with 4.88's. And what looks like original fluid.

Image
How's that for an early Buick rig? The front ring gear is dated from January of 1968. I know they probably sat on a shelf for a bit, but it's still a very early Buick powered truck.

The body will have to wait unfortunately. Right now it's just going to be made mechanically safe and reliable. I want to replace the back half of the frame next year. The last 6" or so of this one has been cut off when some farmer stuck the crappy home made flat bed on it.

I have a rust free California frame I got from Mikel for that project.

I'm really happy with how the springs came out. I need to do the same to the fronts. Those have three extra leafs in them!

It's a good unit to start with. My buddy with all of the Supers has a couple dually long frames like that. They are neat looking trucks.

Any pics of the frames on the LWB duallys?

Nice purchase. If you look after it then the J3000 will pretty much last forever.

So the brakes are completely done. I ended up using M715 rear backing plates and modified my shoes to work with them. I'll replace or repair my LR backing plate this winter. Brakes feel very good in the yard. Got one Lock-O-Matic on, will get the other on tomorrow. Hoping to get the 12' bed off this weekend and start cutting up the homemade 10.5' bed so I can build a new gas tank mount for it. I'm going to build one similar to my 71's, which is a decent copy of the factory tank mount for flat bed dumps.

Have been getting some work done on it over the past couple of weeks.

I got the two off. The 12 footer is resting on it's left side strapped to a come-along that is hooked to two chains hooked to tree's. Redneck engineering.

The 10 footer is a pile of 2" oak debris and scrap metal.

Cleaned off almost all of the random welded on stuff. I cut the remains of the dump bed off last weekend.

Nice fab work on the carrier bearing cross member.

Did the tank mount last weekend and the cross member work today.

Rear cross member is partially done. It's just hanging off the frame rails right now. I ran out of .030 wire. I still need to weld it to the mounting brackets, and weld a piece of angle that will run across the back of the receiver tube and tie into the mounting brackets.

The channel is 6x.313, the mounting brackets are 3.5x.250 angle and the piece of angle that will tie to back of the receiver tube to the brackets will be 2.5x.250. The tail lamps are all wired up, but the reverse lamps and plate lamp are not. Waiting on the terminals I ordered to show up.

Gas tank mount is all done with a temporary filler set up.

I've also:

Pulled the instrument cluster and soldered all the pins on the back of the circuit board for the main plug. A couple where loose, including the one for the gas gauge causing it to not work.

New headlamp switch. Now have working dash and dome lights.

Full tune up. I had installed good used parts previously. Now it has an NOS Delco coil, points and condenser. Along with new production Delco plugs, NAPA Echlin wires, cap and rotor.

Rewired the back half of the Jeep. I installed a weather tight junction box inside of the frame inline with the rear axle and ran all new wires from there back. The last couple of feet of the original harness was missing. I also replaced all the crimp on terminals inside the plugs for the cab to frame harness junction. Still waiting on the wire loom I ordered to show up.

Got the Poston intake off and the correct for 68 intake on. Rebuilt the 2GV carb and replumbed a bunch of stuff today. Still need to blast and paint the air cleaner and make an elbow to connect the breather tube to it. Since taking these pics I've sand blasted and painted the air cleaner, replaced the aftermarket throttle return spring with a stock Buick 2bbl spring, replaced a faulty air temp sensor in the air cleaner (TAC works now) and a bunch of other things.

Got the bed on today. I had to buy new sill beams. I also replaced four of the cross members in the bed. Still waiting on four of my eight u-bolts and my wood spacers to be made. The bed is just sitting on the sill beams in these pics. I moved it over to the garage after and welded it all up. I need to redo the mounts for my rear cross member now and move it back toward the end of the bed. Also bolted the mud flaps on. If you look close you can see the RR is held on with a red c-clamp in the pics.

Then did some feel good, non necessity work and put a new antenna in and replaced the missing stock radio with a correct for 68 Jeep AM unit.

Probably short ones. They add a lot of weight and I don't usually need cab height boards.

BTW, I finally received that Special Order plate in the mail. I'll get a pic for you tonight along with the VIN.

I'll have to get some fresh pics up. The bed is fully welded, all wired up and the rear cross member is in it's final position. I moved it back so it's only a few inches shorter than the bed. Also made a rear apron on the bed.

Swapped in a reman 55amp Motorola alternator. NAPA has it listed for a 68 Jeep, but it's for an AMC. I had to swap the front case half with my alternator. The back half and internals are the same as a Jeep alternator. I also had to replace a the wiring harness from the starter to the alternator. Looks like this once had a pretty severe over charging situation that melded the feed wire for the alternator.

The radio is in and fully working. I get two channels in my drive way.

I still need to do something about my fuel filler, toss something over the floors and put some wood down on the bed. It's getting plywood for now. I'll get some tongue and groove white pine later for it.

Man, I'm jealous. I have been looking for such beauties for the last couple of years with no luck. Great find.
