new power steering pump has no power

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

Recently replaced the p/s pump and installed a new J20 gear. I've bled this thing by jacking up the front wheels and turning lock to lock (with the engine running) tons of times.

It has basically no power and will stall the pump causing the belts to squeal.

What gives? Anyway to troubleshoot this?

Is this with your hydro assist disconnected? And do you have hydro-boost brakes?

This is basically all stock. No ram, no hydroboost. I do have hi steer though.

The steering has less slop in it now, indicating to me that the old gear had some slop in it.

I've red lots of posts talking about bleeding, maybe I should do that more....

Someone said something about a restricter or something in the high pressure hose that gets clogged. Try replacing that hose.

I think that another guy and myself talking about the high pressure bypass. It can get stuck closed or open. With it open you have no power steering. With it closed the pressures can get way too high and you can blow a line.

You can access it on the backside of the pump. Its screws in to the left (farther driver side) than the return line.

This site has a bunch of info: http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/120 ... -steering/

Sounds like you have a bad pump.

I had the same issue when I replaced the PS pump and steering box but I had, like an idiot, not replaced the pressure and return lines. They are Cheap. As soon as I replaced the lines everything worked like a charm. It could be the pressure hose or return lines were collapsing inside and I could see it. I would start there

I've been screwing around for the last two days with the same issue on a 68 Camaro.
It didn't have power steering, so I installed a year model correct pump and gear. It was purchased as a kit through a restoration parts supplier.
Fired it up and it was more like manual with slight assist. I couldn't turn the wheels on my shop floor and was difficult getting it out of my shop.
David Pozzi has good info in his site. He did documentation for the first gen Camaro, but the info should still be relevant http://pozziracing.com/camaro_steering. ... ssure_flow.
Turns out that the factory pump is only rated for @ 900 psi and less, and does not have much flow. Mine doesn't feel like there is much "power" until after 1500 rpm. Later units have a higher pressure setting and larger flow orifice.
From what I understand, for low idle and lower rpm turning, a larger orifice is needed.
I thought about modifications, but decided to call Lares Corp, the company who rebuilt the pump, and see if they have a different bypass valve.
Maybe the pump you bought has the smaller valving.

I drill out the orifice with a 3/16" bit, and remove the shims from the plunger. Basically what the west texas offroad steering mods are.
