So I see that everyone and their mother is doing the 5.3 swaps but I have not seen anyone doing the swaps with the smaller 4.8 V8. Has anyone done this? I''m sure the reason is due to the fact that the cost difference is minimal so obviously bigger is better. But the reason I am bringing this up is that I may be getting a 4.8 engine and trans with about 50k on the odo for FREE. They are out of a 2005 Silverado short bed. Would this swap be the same as 5.3?

The 4.8l makes plenty of power for a FSJ. Put in a mild cam..even just a stock cam from a 98-02 Camaro or an early Z06 and make as much if not more power than the 5.3l.

I just read an article from Super Chevy and they did a comparison with the 5.3 and the 4.8 and there actually wasn't a huge difference at all. And they did say putting in a cam from one of those cars you mentioned Would give it a lot more power.
I didn't know this but the 2 engines share the same block and bore. The 5.3 just has a longer stroke.

Yes they are the same, they use the same block, heads and accessories. If you look at the front of the block behind the alt you will see 4.8/5.3 cast into the block.

I'll be grabbing everything. Engine harness, PCM, and all the belt driven accessories.
Probably will be a year till I can even get around to starting it. I have absolutely no time right now. Have a 1 and a 5 year old and we are planning our wedding in October. So any free time I have has been spoken for for the next 6-8 months. . I'll work in a few hours here and there to do little things.
Buy ALL the Jeep parts you can BEFORE the wedding!! Haha!!!!
Again, don't forget the emissions stuff, like the evap canister! You may not end up using that particular one, but at least you'll know what the factory one requires.

Not to mention the EVAP pressure pump and fuel tank pressure sensor. OBDII tests that the fuel system has no leaks.
