Rear door window electric to manual.

Post by uncletiffy »

My rear door (Tailgate) electric window does not work.

Before I get an electrician and start buying parts, is it possible and easy to install a manual system?

Thanks.

Yes.
You can buy a new manual reproduction from BJs, teamgrandwagoneer or from any dealer that sells Crown brand parts.
The BJs and TGW kits come with the external handle and escutcheon plus the castle clips for the lift arms.

You should take a good look at the lift channel, side channels and inner/outer window wipes before ordering as these are often in bad condition...and since you will be in there, you might as well update/repair all at once.

I did a write-up on the tailgate repair and conversion to manual here:

And you might find that after fixing the lift channel and side channels that the electric motor now works!

Be careful with those arms. They are spring loaded and will release if/when the electric motor assembly is removed. Just removing the glass won't cause them to fly up, though.

Frugal tip: If you're short on cash and your side channel rubbers are shot, don't replace the channel. Just pull out all the rubber parts of the side channel and re-install. Now there's nothing to catch on the window but the channel is still there to guide things. As you shouldn't be driving with the window down, there's nothing to rattle around. : D

Yeah you might want to investigate the Crowne systems. They have a terrible reputation. Over time the gears are known to jump & the handles strip.

I don't think BJ's are selling them because of these issues any more. Well I couldn't find them.

Tailgates are notoriously unreliable.

The safety switch can wear, or tailgate go out of alignment so the switch fails to engage. Many bypass it, me included.

It helps considerably to actually get full power to the motor. The 'weatherproof' connector under the bed was corroded on mine and fixing it was like having a totally new motor.

The key switches go bad too. It is a key cylinder actuating a metal device that pushes a window switch. Mine finally disintegrated. I replaced mine with a low cost, mini toggle from digikey. It was low amp so I also did my own relay conversion. Plus new channels and wipe strips. Writeup forthcoming. One of these days.

Serehill sells a relay kit that i hear is good.

BJ's do not sell the kit, they say that they are troublesome.

I think that I will try and get the original going, I opened the inside panel and everything looks to be in really good shape.
