Steering box ?

Does anyone know the input size of a late model wagoneer ('89) steering box? I have a friend that picked up a really nice steering box a few years back for almost no money. It won't fit on his TJ and said he'd let me have it for basically nothing if it fit the wagoneer. Pretty sure it has a 3/4 input shaft and 31 or 32 spline

It should have fit the TJ. He may not have known there is an alignment lug in the splines.

If this helps, Napa Prolink says this about the steering box for a 1989 GW:

Steering Gear Box Input Shaft Diameter : 1.25"
Steering Gear Box Output Shaft Diameter : .72"

Thanks dambram. I pulled out the J20 box I had in the garage today and its output shaft is 11/16 not 3/4.

By the way these measurements are not exact. just measured with the closed end of a wrench

Hi i have not posted in a couple of years but i am back ..Question i have a stering box that i remove from a 1975 jeep cherokee power steering box.The rag joint shaft spline size is larger than my 1990 grand wagoneer.do older steering boxes have larger splines or is this a j20 box that they changed before i got it .I now it is flare fittings box but my 1990 gw needs box badly and it will be a upgrade .IT ALSO HAS 76 CAST IN HOUSING

I haven't seen a different size, but if that's true, you just need the bigger coupler and a rag joint to bolt it in with either old style hoses or oring fitting adapters.

Ok looks like this box might be to good for my daily driver .This is a Saginaw 800 13/16 36 spline big piston box .I will take my 3/4 30 spline box out of the 81 cherokee and put it in 1990 gw .The 800 box will go in fsj454 ....

the early vs the later FSJ steering gears have different style hose connections on the box.

so even tho the boxes will physically bolt onto the frame (and may even the rag joint may even slide on, depending...) the hoses won't work.

Gotcha, thanks Blake. I pulled out the J20 box I had laying around and the output shaft is just slightly smaller than the AGR box. a 11/16 box wrench fit snuggly over the J20 box vs a 3/4 on the AGR

Hi just disassembled 1975 steering box #5691676 13/16 rag joint .Sorry to say it has 3 inch piston but is still a saginaw preferred 76 box .It was very dirty inside .I just purchased rebuild kit AC-DELCO from rock auto 40.00 $$ .This box will go in 1990 grand wagoner .Saginaw box #276529 3 1/2 inch piston . j20 box 1975 and 76 flare fittings
