Looking for Pistons for a 401 build...

Post by Regular »

I'm getting organized to build a 401 for my Wagoneer. Block is not yet at the machine shop, but it's standard bore and I'm pretty certain 0.010" will clean it up; if not, 0.020" certainly will.

My current challenge is finding affordable pistons that are either of those overbore sizes. I can find plenty of 0.030" off the shelf, but max factory recommended overbore is 0.020" and I'd like to save the block for future builds. I know many folks go even larger, but I just don't see the point of eating up the block if you're not building for high performance numbers. I'd be happy with cast or forged. I'm just looking for a mild street engine, say 9.0 - 9.5 compression ratio. Custom pistons will cost ~$600+ compared to a .030" forged SpeedPro TRW set around $400.

I was looking at Flatlander Racing's rebuild kit that supposedly includes custom pistons. https://flatlanderracing.com/hpkits-amc.html I need to see if that is a reasonable option at $1200.

Just wondering if anyone had any leads on a set pistons for the smaller overbores.

Thanks,

John

Thanks Lumpskie! I'm betting those pistons are std bore, but I may need a couple rods due to pitting. That block looks pretty darn clean. I'm in PA though, so it's a bit out of reach. I truly appreciate the leads though.

I found out that it's much easier and more cost effective for the machine shops to go right to 0.020 and not 0.010, so I've pretty much narrowed it down to 0.020 pistons. Not luck thus far in finding a set... but time is not an issue right now, as it's too cold to hold a wrench!

Also, I did some research on Flatlander and the reviews weren't flattering. Looks like I'll be hunting down the rebuild parts piecemeal myself.
