258 Carb question

I have an 82 j10 and i got a good deal on a 81 carter bbd. I could use a little help with properly hooking up this carb, I got a good write up on doing the nutter bypass. Not quite sure what to do with the other vacuum lines. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You couldn't give me a carter for free! I just got rid of mine for a motorcraft 2150 after fighting for over a year with my bbd.

You have a BBD from the factory, and they are junk. Do NOT put another one on there. Literally the worst carb I have ever worked on. Replace it with a 2150 or a Weber 32/36.

I've got a BBD on my J10 and CJ5. I don't have problems with them. What hoses are you having problems with?

There's an '82 manual online at the Tom Collins site www.oljeep.com - that will tell you where to connect the hoses.

Most people would only keep the BBD if they wanted to be emissions compliant. The BBD is the OEM carburetor that everybody loves to hate. It's probably not as bad as the negative reviews it gets, but most people just replace it with a 2100 Motorcraft or the Holley-Weber kit.

Look at the vacuum diagrams on the Tom Collins site. There is a diagram for the 1980 model year that you can likely use.

If you want to keep the BBD and eliminate the emissions devices, that's a whole other topic. Look at the 1980 diagram and see if that makes sense to you.

The BBD can be made to run properly, but it is very finicky and has to have its main jets cleaned regularly. The most common issue if the mains will start to get buildup in them and cause the fuel to drip out of them as opposed to releasing fuel to be atomized. This results in a very rich idle that will typically result in stalling when you come to a stop.

It's an extremely common issue. In the 10 years I have had my Weber I have had to tune it twice. The freshly rebuilt BBD had to be messed with every few months. And at the time I was daily driving it, so there was no sitting or anything.

By adding a filter for EFI in the line before the fuel pump I cured the issues with my BBD. Before that I crossed #1 and #6 plug wires usually once a week to clear the jets. I have been very lucky and only run into 2 out of the 50 or so I've owned and many others I worked on that were not fixable. I learned how to work on them from dealing with Mopars for years.

Already been said but its worth saying again, don't put another BBD in there, they are terrible. Definitely replace it with a Motorcraft 2150 or weber 32/36. I've run both on my 258 and they're both great carbs. I'm running the Weber now, but I honestly miss the 2150. It gave the 258 noticeably more power than the weber, and actually better mileage. Not to mention much cheaper. Just my .02

He has not been logged in since Oct 19, 2014 so no telling. That Jeep may be crushed by now for all we know.
