If I were to take a motor out of a newer FSJ mated to a TF727 and put it in my Cherokee mated with a TH400 what problems would arrise? Would it be a simple bolt in swap or would the fly wheel and other parts related to transmission-engine connection need to be exchanged as well? Any other advice in going from old AMC V8 to new AMC V8?
Need to swap over flex plates. Also, there is a spacer ring inside the crank on the TH400 one that needs to be swapped over also. It fits over the snout on the TH400 converter.
1977 Cherokee S, Ford 5.0, 5 speed, BW 1356, 33 x 10.50 BFG's. No longer my DD.
2007 Mercury Milan, 2.3L, 5-speed, now my DD. 29 mpg average.
Above post has you covered. You need a flex plate for a TH400 for the engine you are putting in. AMV V8's are externally balanced. So if the new engine is a 360, you need a flex plate for a 360.
And you will need the crank bushing for use with a TH400.
Neither part will cost you much and are readily available.
Actually I was asking in the event that I need to go from a motor set up for tf727 into my Cherokee that has the th400. And I do plan to do a 700r4 swap in the distant (very distant) future.
I don't know if I'd be daring enough to push my luck on not cracking the flexplate. And if I do end up having to swap in a newer motor I'll still have the old sleeve from taking the original motor out.
