I am new to the forum, and new to Jeeps.
I have a 1964 Jeep Gladiator and would like to know how or if I can lower the suspension?
Right now the axles sit under the springs. Is it possible to mount the springs under the axle?
Thank You!
Later FSJ's were spring under up front from the factory, but their springs were mounted under the frame instead of on the side of the frame.
Really if you want to lower it, its going to take some work. The front axle would have to go, because if you convert it to spring under, the axle will be right up against the oil pan. It really needs to be converted to IFS.
What is your ultimate plan for it? And how are you fab skills?
Funny thing is Jeep designed and marketed these trucks as having a lower ride height than the competition. They were designed as 4 wheel drive from the beginning where GM/Ford/Dodge trucks were generally designed as 2 wheel drive and then converted to 4 wheel drive. Look at a late 60's Ford, they sat way up there, which may seem cool until you have to load the bed with a shovel.
What is your ride height now? Measure from the wheel invert to the fender lip, or post a picture.
If you wanted to really lower the truck significantly below factory ride height, a custom "drop" axle would have to fabricated for the front, or fitting a hot rod type IFS. Either one would require conversion to 2WD.
