Post by jsinajeep »

Has anybody used a tow dolly to tow a FS Wagoneer. Any comment is welcome.

Yes

We've used a tow dolly to bring home both the J20 and the waggy.

The J20 barely and I mean BARELY fit on the tow dolly because it's a wide track. The GW fit perfect.

When you tow them did you leave the steering locked or did you leave it unlocked.

I don't really remember...

I seem to recall leaving it unlocked, in neutral, but not sure...

Unlocked and either tcase in neutral or rear driveshaft off if long distance. Towed over 100 vehicles. Full size Ford doesn't fit well unless you have skinny tires (wiped out both towdolly fenders)

Steering has to be unlocked, as its a pivot point for cornering. If its more than 50 miles, it's general practice to drop the rear shaft. But otherwise t-case in neutral. If the t-case linkage is questionable, drop the shaft to be safe. You can used 4wd lock to get it on and off the dolly.

Biggest issue is stopping. Make sure the tow vehicle weighs more and has good brakes. Technically u-haul will not give you a dolly for an FSJ as its over the tow limit for a trailer without brakes. In CA I think it's 3500 pounds.

Thanks guys. The tow dolly has been fitted with electric brakes and I have had wheel strap made to fit the 35"
tires and have added a chain to go around the axle tube at each front wheel [which I know will need to be left
loose]. Will be pulling it behind my 5th wheel camper which I modified the receiver that run 5' inside of the frame
so that I am not pulling on just the rear part of the frame. I have all ready pulled the drive shaft and understand
that part. Just was not sure about the steering.
