I worked with a guy who was in the air force when they were transitioning into jets. He was a crew chief with the group that was going from base to base trying to get pilots to sign up for jet training rather than getting out. He said the first jets when they started shot out a gout of flame behind them. Since the officer giving the sales talk had their back to them, he said that one of the chiefs would stand close to the back holding one hand over his eyes with his zippo lighter in the other with his arm all the way out like he was trying to get the engine to start! He said more than one pilot said if you have to light it to start it I don't want nothing to do with it
