Well after throwing every snake oil out there to flush and clean my radiator and never being able to keep the jeep cool I dug back into all things cooling.
Finally pulled the trigger on finishing replacing the heater core that exploded and has been on the shelf for years. Pain in the butt dash bolts but definitely easier than I led myself to believe. Snapped the condensate drain of the A/C so I’ll need to fix that once the A/C is back online.
Started with the thermostat which I swear I had replaced when I first got it….. looks like it was never replaced by the poor function and snapping both bolts for the housing. In with a 180 degree replacement from the parts bin.
I also looked up testing criteria for the thermal fan clutch which failed. So I picked up a new one which also failed the “static test” from the TSM, but I figured what the heck I guess I’m reading it wrong and installed it anyways. Seems to work well.
I also found myself an eBay special on an aluminum replacement for 200 shipped.
All installed and burped the system, watched the sniper thermostat hit 183 and drop right back down over and over! Finally can check off cooling.
Lastly, I’m pretty sure I broke my fuel pump. The overheating issue had likely caused vapor lock which led me to checking the tank pickup for blockage. This of course led to me finding no blockage but breaking the crispy old filter… picked up a new sending unit since the gauge was reading way off. My genius idea was to blow out the fuel lines with an air compressor while I was at it. Didn’t think to disconnect the line from the mechanical pump though and hit it with ~100 psi. It’s still pumping some, but looking in the clear filter after the mechanical pump it seems to be dismal output, the surge tank went dry at idle…
I could just replace the fuel pump again, but the more I think about it, I have a high pressure submersible fuel pump in the RobbMC surge tank and a brand new sending unit, I wonder if I can finagle together these items into an in tank pump and just plate off the mechanical pump to simplify the system. I’ll probably post up about this elsewhere if I can’t find by searching. But the BJ’s pump looks like they just put these two pieces together…
