Carpet vs Vinyl

Post by thej10guy »

Hey all. For my 83 j10 I ordered a vinyl flooring kit. I wasn’t thrilled with it and still am not. I have used heat which has helped some but it still isn’t great.

This is more so a question for j10 owners but everyone’s input is appreciated. For my other truck I am not sure whether to get another vinyl kit or a carpet kit. I did a little bit of looking on here and have seen some mixed reviews about the molded carpet kit for them. What is everybody’s input on the carpet kit and its fitment? I don’t really have a good upholstery person local to just have one made.

Curious about why you are not thrilled with the vinyl? Is it not laying down and forming very good? My vinyl came out fairly good and I got it from BJ's. Although it has taken about a year for it to settle in. Sorry that I don't have any advice on the carpet.

Unfortunately all the carpet kits come from the same place. The fit where the back corners meet the wheel wells was TERRIBLE. Maybe they would've fixed it, BJ's customer service was good, but I cut and patched it.

Get a quote from a local upholsterer before ordering. But with decent pics of his work, of course.

Rubber bed mat for a Dakota, Colorado, or similar sized truck, can be trim fit easily to dimensions needed. Heavy enough it will stay in place, and can be taken out if need be to dry out the cab.
If more ventilation needed, Harbor Freight sells the work mats with honeycomb pattern, which would allow more air to the floor, but also more sound and less insulating attributes, as a solid mat will give you.

Sorry, you're right I was talking Wag. No idea about the trucks. They prolly fit a lot better since they go straight back, right?

neither fit like OEM, i installed the vinyl flooring in my daughters cherokee, seeing how that was what came in it as OEM equipt. it took some work it was quasi molded but way oversized which allowed a lot of contouring , a lot of snipping and lots of heat gun use got it to lay down it really laid flat after parking it in the sun ,windows up and allowing the interior to warm up greatly

I know you're asking about carpet vs vinyl, but with my (non-Jeep) truck and my previous XJ, I bed lined the interior. I used a higher quality brand (Al's Liner by Scorpion Coatings with a roll-on heat and noise reducer base coating) and it turned out much better than the vinyl kits available. I tried vinyl in my XJ first and it just looked horrible.

It was still looking great in my pickup, and it's a good protective coating under the carpet I ended up putting in after redoing the interior. I plan to do it with my Wagoneer and my IH 1210 when the time comes. Another point for me on it is that if it does start looking bad, it's much less expensive to clean up and put another coat on in the future, assuming you get one that can be top coated after.
