If you are going to go through the knuckles and install disk brakes, suggest you also do the knuckle stud replacement.

The closed 30 is the same as the closed 27 shown here from the knuckle out. You'll also have the two-hole right knuckle, but functionally it's the same.

Also, IIRC you want the rubber knuckle seals instead of the felt ones? Looks like Crown sells both. OEM was felt. Don't put oil in the knuckles. A mix of oil and grease is often used ("knuckle pudding") or cornhead grease or other. Search on earlyCJ5 and you'll find hundreds of posts about this.

Finally had a chance to look at the stud conversion.

Way out of my comfort level at the moment, not going to lie. I'll just be careful when dissassembling/reassembling everything, I don't think I'll have any issues with the threads. Maybe once I've gotten my shop built and have a better set up I can revisit it. Right now, everything is being done in my driveway and my main work bench is a length of 3/4 plywood on two saw horses.

Finally had a chance to resize some photos. I'll post an intro thread soon.

Anyway, here's the old detent/kickdown solenoid. You can see in the second image that the plate couldn't be moved any more because the rubber/plastic piece is jammed up.

Might have solved the problem? Good investigative work.

Yeah, totally solved the problem. I just didn't have the ability to shrink the photos down to share them initially.

Shifts very smoothly now.
