Anyone been successful removing scratches from tailgate window?

Post by Theodore »

Anyone been successful removing scratches from tailgate window?

Am working my way toward paint later this year & am looking at things that can be done now vs risking scratched paint later. Am planning to replace the tailgate glass channels, replace the wipes & disassemble the regulator motor to re-grease it.

Our GW’s tailgate window has scratches on both sides. From the wiper on the outside & inside wipe on the inside.

Has anyone been successful removing scratches from tailgate window. Have heard that the tailgate window is different glass than the windshield & is harder, and that I should look for a replacement.

I had good results on my windshield with 0000 Steel Wool.
About $2-3 for a bag of 12 pads, a small container of dish soapy water, then start buffing it out.
Might take awhile, but best suggestion I have, next to finding a new glass.

I don't think you can do anything on the inside with the defrost grid. I think taking it off will leave a worse mess.

For the outside you can buy fine diamond abrasive and a felt pad. I bought it for the quarter window that I somehow sand blasted. Didn't do a darn thing for me since the pitting was too deep but it might work for you.

I ended up using so a black Sharpie on it. Have to get pretty close to see it now.

I think I’m going to head to the junkyard this weekend & see what the GW’s tailgate window there looks like & go from there.

Maybe you will get luck and find one that isn't scratched, but its such a common issue. That should be mostly buffable as noted above. But make sure you replace your window wipes and runners before you put that effort in, or it will just happen again.

Thanks, Stuka - have new wipes & channels in the stash ready to go in; hoping to only pull the glass once. Will let you know what we find.

If you don't care about having defrost a glass shop can cut a new one and have it tempered.

Have been out of town the last couple weekends & haven’t made any progress. Am planning on heading over to the junkyard in the next couple of weeks & checking out the GW I’ve poached so many other parts from & see if the rear window is good & go from there.
