Highest mileage Jeep youve ever owned or seen in person

Post by candymancan »

SO what is the highest mileage Jeep youve ever own or seen in person. Was it a rebuilt engine or tranny or all original ?

Highest ive personally seen was 98 Grand cherokee 5.2 liter v8 limited. I was taking the sunroof from it as my 5.9 ZJ sunroof the track and cable was broken for yeara, and i had to put a car battery on it in salvage yard to get power to move the sunroof motor.. when i turned the key for power i saw 463k miles. Now i doubt that was with the original transmission.. not sure about the engine but still thats the most ive ever seen on any car in person and it was from this Jeep.

Ironicly the Jeep was in great shape.. shame to see it in the yard but i got two doors from it to replace mine that had tons of dents from jerks of the years and my sunroof.

As for in the family its my moms 4.0 98 Grand cherokee with 275k miles. Original engine trans and everything else drive line related. Just a new alternator water pump timing chain stuff like that.. The tranny is causing issues when cold but once it warms up its fine. I suspect the internal seals are hard cause pressure leakage and when warmed up it seals itself. She bought the Jeep in 2000 with 24k miles and still daily drives it.

As for what i own my 5.9 ZJ is almost at 200k nothing too special. But i needs a new transfercase chain mine has slack in it

Most I have owned is my J10 with an estimated 242k ish (The speedo is off due to regear, so this isn't 100% accurate). It is technically possible its 42k, or 142k, but with what I have replaced, these both seem low. I mean, I was almost able to take the timing chain off just by lifting it up over the cam gear (this was done 30k miles ago).

I have seen several XJ's in the upper 200k range. But never seen one in persons with over 300k.

I have to assume my crap is at 213k.

Had 87k on the odo when I bought it. Big ole hitch, trailer break, dual tanks, front seat had been replaced with fabric, heads have been replaced, transm ission bell housing was cracked and had been repaired. No way somebody wore the seat out and towed enough to need all that crap and only drove it 87k in 40 years. I had to figure it had 187k on it when i bought it.
Well it ain't just the smoke and the traffic jam that makes me the bitter fool I am But this four-wheel buggy is A-dollaring me to death.
For gas and oils and fluids and grease, And wires and tires and anti freeze....And them accessories, Well honey, that's something else.

Thats interesting i hear those 4.7s were BEEP engines.. cracked heads.. clogged oil valleys ect..

But now that i think of it.. anything made by chrysler gets cracked heads.. the 4.0 after 99 had cracked head issues. All the 5.2 and 5.9 liter magnums had cracked heads although there cracked heads usually never caused issues but still

Not a Jeep, but my family's 1988 Volvo 240 had 278K on it when they sold it to one of my mom's former students when she moved to College in the SF Bay area. As of 2016 when my Mom retired from teaching that family still had it and it was at 310K. I drove it for a few years in College as well, from about 210K to 265K. I bought a Mint green 1995 Subaru Legacy wagon with the 2.2 pushrod engine and put 100K on it before I sold it in 2013 with 280K. When I bought Susan she had 91K on the dash, could be 191, but hard to tell. Seats had been replaced, engine was really tired. So I'd now be at like 202K at most.

282,000+ on the 87 XJ with the stock, fuel-injected 4.0 and 5-speed. This Cherokee passed through 3 of us in my family and was running great when we sold it. It had other issues developing, like a rear end noise and leaking injector gaskets but still ran well. This was the highest mileage I'd ever seen on a vehicle in person and the highest on one I'd ever owned. Working on 237k+ on my 98 4Runner, 3.4L now.

Yea anything chrysler engine wise is crap.. the 4.0 when chrysler took over had cracked head. Cracked exhaust manifilds. My mom 4.0 had s broken valve spring at 65k miles. Grabted she now has 290k on it.

The 5.9 liters had pinging predetonation issues. The intake manifolds leak oil because of its two part design with a gasket.. the heads are all cracked aparently. My 5.9 has 200k miles. Ive fixed the intake abd put a catch can on and the engine still pings occasionally and i think its dsmsged the engine as i have bottom end noise now. Not terribly bad but its been showing up. Pisses me off.

4.7 cracked heads and blocked oil valleys.. the 3.6 and 5.7 and 6.2 and 6.4 all have camshaft issues even to this day

I had a 95 XJ country with 325,000 on original drivetrain. Automatic trans had to be manually shifted but it didn’t slip.

I rolled 300K over in my GW in Oct 2017. By then the only thing original under the hood and in drive train was the brake booster.

4.7 cracked heads and blocked oil valleys.. the 3.6 and 5.7 and 6.2 and 6.4 all have camshaft issues even to this day
The issue with the 4.7 was sludge , would block oil returns.
I ran many different oils finding Amsoil did not sludge , I monitored build up in the oil cap . Valvoline was the worst I believe , and I used to use that most

And overheating they say but I ran mine pretty hot a few times. I friend went through a couple 4.7s but mine kept on going !!

the 74 being parked for a few years with 349Kmiles on oem engine and trans, it still runs, but is not weathertight, bought in 1983 with 79Kmiles

the 85 with 227K on oem engine and trans, that was a test lab, bought at 198K in 02 for $250, still running, albeit it gave me some grief in the last few months.... hard to do some diagnostic without a scope... in the end it was a failing spark plug boot, that gave a bad misfire... fried a spark plug, I had to increase the idle speed... until I realized that it was more than the spark plug, but the boot creating arcing... the increased idle speed and activated the EGR valve at idle... and you get the picture of terrible idle, poor manifold vacuum, that I attributed to failing ignition system...
