J-3000 Has no VIN not sure on year

Post by IOWA J3000 »

Step dad has owned dozens of FSJ’s finally sold me one that’s rather hard up. Someone bondo’ed and “painted” before it was parked in a corn crib ( that’s why the no vin #) I was hoping there were some tell tale signs of what year it may be sos that I could buy a manual or at least get on the right track for parts. I can post pictures also if it’d help.

If the driveline is original, that will shine some light on the possible year range. Other options could as well. Can you find the bill of material number on the axles? It's usually stamped into a tube to the right of the diff (looking at the cover). If you can decode that at Dana's website, that will tell you what year the axle(s) is from.

Centered speedo with the heater controls on the left of the instrument panel and grill with a badge in front of passenger makes it '72 or older. Plastic instrument panel with heater controls and grab bar on the passenger side is the later version.

Brow ended at some point, can't remember when.

What motor? That'll tell a lot of guys something.

How you going to register it?

The brow didn't go away until '80. Pics of everything (dash, engine bay, trans, t-case, interior, and body from front/rear/sides, etc.) would help a lot. There's a few guys on here that know the early models rather well.

Also, if possible, look for a serial number on the frame. That may help in determining the year, more than anything.

Whatever you plan to do for registration, delete any reference to it here and never mention it on the internet again. ;)

Darn nice looking truck, though. I'd guess somewhere around 70, but someone else can probably get more specific.

Thanks! We actually have been through the process of getting a new VIN in the past and its not that grueling. Could just be our State/Area too.

Some states definitely make it easier than others. I have no problems whatsoever with how you title it, provided it's not stolen, but that information is just better left off the almighty internet. Big brother is always watching. haha

Lack of side marker lights and "hazard" flasher switch on the steering column make me think it's a 67.

I want to say 232 from when I did research about 6 months ago..? I put the project on hold for the winter. Just got it running again the other night, did probably a 100ft circle and parked again.. no breaks. I'm thinking somewhere 62-67? My main concern for year is getting the right interior parts/accessories, and would really like a parts manual if it exists.
Is there any place to find a more telling serial number or part number?

There is a '62-'73 parts catalog available here:

http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html

Unfortunately, it looks like his oldest TSM for the J-trucks isn't until the mid '70s models.

Looks like a 66-68
Get the engine number on the block pad, passenger side : you'll get a build date by decoding this number

Unlikely, but if you VERY closely(like magnifying glass) look @ front door jamb where the plate was, sometimes you can see the VIN due to them using the raised letter stamped plate.
Depends on how long it's been MIA, and obviously if the jambs were repainted etc.

It's definitely an AMC six. It should be a 1st generation 232. The easiest way to ID a 1st gen engine is by the starter on the driver's side. The 258 was also installed in J-trucks, but did not appear until 1971ish with the 2nd generation. All the generation 2 and 3 engines have the starter on the passenger side.

Good news and bad news this weekend. Good news we got a hold of the elderly man who sold the truck to my step dad. He assures me he has the title and all of the badges in his shop. (I'm hoping hes right and it isn't a pain in the a**). Also I looked up the serial number on the Engine and from what I gather it is a 1966. (serial 802L18). Now the bad News is I pulled all the interior, which someone had done up in all shag carpet. Mice nests and rotten floors galore!
Now that you guys have helped me to find the answer to my model year I can move on to new questions on parts and repair in other FSJnetwork boards.
I truly appreciate all the help I received on this thread!
thanks!

So you have a typical 66-67 J-truck as a starting point.

The J3000 series was only produced from '65-'69. In 1970 (some say '71) they dropped the 3000 and began the 4000 series. Of course badging gets mixed up and swapped out sometimes, as well as many other parts. Side markers can be a good indicator, Reflective markers came along in '68 and went to lighted markers in '70 so no markers mean pre '68...that is unless the bed and fenders got replaced somewhere along the line. I also understand the AMC 232 was used from '67 until '70. I'm not sure when they added the padded dash but I see the holes for it which could help narrow things down but generally I am seeing what's most likely a '67.

I agree : they dropped the J3000 in january 1970, same for the reflectors and the Rhino grille for the Gladiators
The AMC232 was used as soon as '66 until december 1970
The padded dash was optional from the beginning and became standard in 66
