i decided to see whats under the paint around the windschield as it looks weird. of course we found that : RUST
any suggestion to fix that apart welding some steel plates ?
thanks
Tara
Thats pretty bad, ive dealt with alot of rust on my 90, and fixed most of it.. That rust wil need to be cut out to keep it from spreading, and sadly you will need to weld new metal in there. Welding isnt hard though, get a $100 flux core welder from harbor freight and teach yourself using sheets of metal from lowes and youtube videos.. Thats how i did it, and ive done floorboards, and frames, and control arms and leaf spring brackets ect.
The deeper rust inside that you cant get too, i would coat with 4-5 coats of Rustiliums rust reformer from home depot. Its in harbor freight too but cheaper in home depot.. Take the chunky stuff off, as that will just make it rust worse and the stuff thats just surface rust spray and use a alot of coats.. letting it dry for a few minutes in between.
But ill be honest even for me this would be a pita to fix.. it looks really bad.. most of it is gone deff not surface rust and rot instead.. sorry

I'd go to the junk yard and cut out several post. The post are madeof 3 layers of folded metal. I would replace the section that are bad and graft them into the old post by Filetin them in one layer at a time. Dont have the seams of the 3 layers on top of each other but stagger them for stregnth. There are also voids that you can add flat bar of 3/8 round bar to increase the strength. I have a thread on here where I replaced the roof on my truck. http://www.fsjnetwork.com/forum/viewtop ... hilit=ugly
If not, do some browsing on that forum and this one. I know I've see rust repair of those areas.

Let us know your thoughts about fixing it...
I pulled the 74 out of storage a couple of days ago, and with 349K on the OEM engine and trans, it drives much better than the 85, less noise, better suspensions... so I am thinking of trying to fix the same issues without a body transplant. Installing a newer carb made a big difference, getting rid of the noisy air pump, the engine bay is so quiet...
Probably installing flat iron to keep track of the angle of the roof with the windshield around the door opening, then welding angle iron for strength, unless I can find a local metal worker that can reproduce the OEM A pillar profile

You are more brave than I. That kind of rust would have had me looking for a new shell or an entirely new rig.

I still haven't tackled this on mine, it will be pretty much like yours, I imagine.... top and bottom look about the same without having pulled the windshield... Unfortunately, the guy with the Cherokee has disappeared, I was trying to get him to make me a new pillar. I have a cut off pillar from a donor that is clean, but didn't really want to cut the entire thing out and replace it. There is a link that someone posted on ifsja that allows you to view the photobucket ransom pictures, it actually works very well too. http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=184167
Wow, I envy where you live... that's on my bucket list, but sadly, I don't get to surf much anymore...
To answer your question, yes, the drip rail attaches at the corner, and runs down the A pillar to almost the front cowl.
I hope that's the answer you're looking for.
