Mountain meets Pacific Alvord/Steens Oct 4-7, 2018

Post by ghcoe »

Hey thought I would put this out there.

I am planning a trip into the Alvord Desert/Steens Mountain area sometime late next year. This would be the half way point from Reno to Boise. Anyone interested in doing a meetup?

I was thinking a meetup in Fields, Oregon and then continue to Alvord Desert for a overnight. Then heading north and around to Frenchglen and do the Steens Mountian loop. There are primitive camp opportunities and some camp sites we could choose from for night two. We can then say our good-byes and head home on day three.

I know of a few cool areas to visit on this trip. Probably September or early October since mosquitoes can get bad in the Steens. Need a frost to kill the little buggers.

Let me know, George.

Definitely. I drive from Denver to Eugene every year for Thanksgiving. Next year, my wife and I were already talking about making it a family adventure instead of just me avoiding her family by driving instead of flying.

Yeah, that is why I posted here to see if anyone was interested. I see you guys have some activity there in Reno. I thought you may be interested in meeting up since fields is almost exactly the same distance for me as it is for you. But, hey all are welcome to tag along if they want.

Need to meetup someday.

Sounds good. I will try and come up with some dates and post up. Not sure when first frost is, but probably right after that. I was there last time in June and the mosquitoes where bad. A 4 day trip turned into a 2 day trip. One night was enough for me. I never knew there was a elite force of mosquitoes that can surround you in a cloud, fly through deet spray with no effect, infiltrate your tent at night through the zippers, but I now know where they train for combat.....and that my friends is the Steens Mountains!

Something that first weekend in October would be great, work keeps me really busy through September.

It is a great place. Been about 15 years since I have been there so I am sure I will be disappointed with how much traffic it is getting now.

Sounds good to me. I planned on a 4 day trip. One day to and from, two days there. We want to do a Thursday-Sunday or a Friday-Monday?

Nice. I will post up some more info as it comes about. Piecing together a route now and also fuel stops.

Just be warned fuel may be a bit pricy in this area. Denio I read just got their pumps up and running this year. Fields, has fuel and Frenchglen is sketchy. From my reading all where pricy. So come in with as much fuel as you can from lower priced locations.

Is there a trail guidebook for the area? I have the California, Nevada, and Colorado ones but not finding one for Oregon.

There might be. I don't use books much anymore. I just use online maps and plot a course...

I've got a 5 gallon Jerry Can. Should I grab another before this trip?
