I have read through the forum and come across a few threads that speak to this but I wanted to post my specifics to see what yall think. I received a quote from a machine shop to completely restore my AMC 360 to factory spec's. This includes tearing down the motor, clean and machine as needed. New cam, lifters, rods, etc... They also include a 4 yr parts and labor warranty (60,000 miles).
They want $2,327 if I bring in the motor or for an additional $1,350 they will pull and re-install the motor for me.
Is this price reasonable and what additional questions do I need to ask them? I have worked on many jeeps through the years but my engine knowledge is only at the point of bolting on parts or fixing random things that break... never been inside one or had one re-built... any advice is greatly appreciated! thanks

It does include the pistons and i think it includes rebuilding the heads, he said new rockers and springs. I will follow up with him on that one.
No oiling mods, we didn't have that conversation but from my research on the forum I would like to have those done.
That is for the stock cam, he said an aftermarket one would raise the price based on the part cost. The $$ I listed are basically for stock parts except the aluminum intake is included. He said we could go through upgrades but this would be the starting price.

That's reasonable, but I'd bet it's with the cheapest parts on the market. I'd discuss upgrading to standard quality parts it wouldn't cost much more. if your rockers look good you shouldn't need new ones. always use new valve springs. balancing is worth the little bit extra in my opinion.
I would ditch the oil mod idea unless you plan on drag racing. even then ....ehhh.... in the last 35 years I've torn down a lot of 390's and 401's and it's a mystery to me why this mod is so popular . I have yet to see a failure this mod would have corrected. but I have seen the mod cause problems when Billy Bob's whiz bang copper line cracks out.
There is rebuilt and then there is rebuilt. have your own engine rebuilt and and you know what you have. don't trust some cookie cutter shop to insure Jose puts a few Chinese parts in right side up..
If the warranty included the cost of THEM pulling the motor, fixing and re-installing, have THEM R&R the motor. $650 x2 to pull and reinstall the motor is a fair price, esp if you don't have the time, space, energy, know-how, or motivation to do it yourself.
Just got two quotes for a rebuild on my 360.
$2200 to $2500
I'm in southwestern pa.
Now is a good time to get it done do to the race season is over here.
Shops are looking for work this time of year.
And I done think they'll use cheap parts if there giving you a 60,000
Warranty.
I just built my 360 and it cost me $2500 IIRC , a quality machine shop did the machine work and sold me stock type quality parts at cost + 10%. I assembled it.
Anything much less would either mean they cut corners or they work for minimum wage. cheap builds leave out a lot of things. sometimes those things come back and bite you, sometimes you'll never know the difference. do you feel lucky? that's the question.
Just had my 360 rebuilt here in the Harrisburg Pa area in October 2016. Here is the breakdown.

I pulled myself. Also had the trans and transfer case resealed for 200. Now no more red fluid on floor if I didn't drive everyday. Worth it to have them resealed. Had it done by local transmission shop.
Work was done by Hammaker enterprises in Grantville Pa. They do a lot of race engines and I have not had a single problem. Their work was flawless.
