Metal brake/fuel line sizes??

Post by tedlovesjeeps71 »

I hate starting new threads for such random and simple questions but here comes another one..
I got the new gas tank straps in the mail today so I'm edging closer to when I'll pull the old tank and start replacing stuff. I'd love to run new metal fuel lines as well as properly replace the rear metal brake line. A previous owner must have had it rot out and a previous "mechanic" just cut it and ran a booty-fab repair. I'll probably order a coil of whatever size I need so I can keep it on hand. I just need to know what sizes I need. Feed and return fuel and the brake line. Chime in guys... I'm building the shopping cart soon.

Fuel supply line should be 3/8" ID. The return line might be 5/16 or 3/8. I don't remember for sure.

The brake lines I just replaced on my rear axle (going from the T to the wheel cylinders on the axle itself) is 5/16". I'm not sure if the main lines from the proportioning valve to the connection points on the frame are 3/8 or 5/16.

Oh, and do yourself a favor and invest in a quality flaring tool. The cheap ones you get from the parts store or harbor freight suck.

I use this and it makes perfect flares every time: https://www.amazon.com/Ridgid-23337-345 ... B001HWKZLO

Actually, I think it's this one: It has the quality cutting tool and a good case with it: https://www.amazon.com/Ridgid-Flaring-C ... 2CEE6CQ9J4

Wife said my early B-day present is this... I've used it several times and it's the easiest, highly effective flaring tool I've tried. That's why I asked about the line size because I'd like to order the tubing when I order the tool. Image

I'm sure that's wrong. Except for the early 4-cylinder Jeeps, Jeeps have a 5/16" line from the fuel tank, and a 1/4" line return. The brake line is all 3/16" except for the lines from the master cylinder to the combination valve. Note this is the diameter of the tubing, not the size of the flare nuts.

I suggest steel for the fuel lines - you can buy 25' coils of steel line on eBay inexpensively. Brake line, fuel line, same stuff.

That seems plausible. When I posted I was going to write that, in my experience, only the big GM V8s of the 70s got 3/8" lines. The 350 is not "big" but it is GM from that era, and part of a big car family. I'm just too young to know that much about the 350 Jeeps!

I did have a typo in my post. The brake lines were 3/16", not 5/16".

It's kind of odd that a 2bbl Buick 350 needs a 3/8" line, while a 4bbl 454 uses a 5/16". Seems to be a Buick thing I guess.

I'm running NiCopp lines in my new project. Easier to flare, bend, will not rust, DOT approved and I got it for the same price in a roll as steel line on amazon.
Thats a pretty cool flaring tool you have there! Is it the eastwood one?

Are you in Colorado? I was unbolting the clips from the brake line on the parts car wag I have (someone is picking up the frame this weekend) and I thought I was wasting my time but that someone will be able to use them at some point...

I've got the rear brake line (that runs along the frame) sitting in my carport, you can have it if you want.

Thanks CK.
Surprisingly the fuel lines are in great condition. The brake line... not so much. But that's no biggie, I'll make a new one for that. What's funny is I'll have to cut the fuel line anyway to install the fuel pump. Image
