I screwed up

Post by comet the dog »

What size is the harmonic balance bolt? And thread count. I need to tap the end of the crank. I used the bolt to "press" the balancer on. Apperantly it was cross threaded, thought it was fine. Nope. 360 1988 auto. :banghead: :banghead: :(

Yeah, thanks. Got it. Fortunately it was just the first few threads that I boogered up. From now on, proper tool.

don't be too hard on yourself, pretty much all of us have done it, and the "proper tool" I have doesn't fit with the radiator in place. I use some 1/2"-20 all thread so I can get it all the way into the crank, then tap the balancer with a brass mallet while I crank down a nut to seat it. Double nut the all thread out and install the bolt. ;)

Matt knows the right method. 1/2-20 all thread or a long fully threaded bolt to avoid the double-nut dance.
