The way I put rear W/T flares on

Post by jsinajeep »

I hope this will help someone

I started off by cutting the old flares off about 1" from the body
Image
Image
Then I cut the corner
Image
Image
Then I started clamping from the bottom up on both side
Image
and pop riveted it up as I went front then rear and then the top[pop rivet it into the fender flange]
Image
Image
then I heated the corner and hammer them up and pop riveted them
Image
Image
After I have it all riveted in I cut the flares off next to the body
Image
Image
Then I spot welded it all the way around and filled in the corner
Image
Image
Then I used the grinder to clean up the weld some[not to much]
Image
Image
Then fitted the fender where I wanted it and pop riveted it on[fiber glass fender]
Image
Image
I used a auto seam sealer to fill in between the body and fender and painted

Nice work, this is the first post I've seen where someone has taken the time to outline the process step by step despite it being a common problem- way to go!

Well I am the old man :D and someone else will need to put this somewhere
so everyone can find it. I did this over two years ago and could not figure out
how to post more then one picture per post until now.

Do you think that the panel epoxi would work as well instead of spot welding? BTW, nice work

I have heard that epoxy is good on some stuff, but like I said Old Man and I know welding hold ;)

I know this is a resurrection, but when you riveted the flare in place above, did it overlap the the inside of the cab? I was reading the instructions that BJ's has with theirs and it mentions that. I was not if the ones you had were a different design... I looked at the ones on Z & M's (Zachs) website as well... they are less expensive than BJ's, but not sure which design they are

Not sure what you are asking. The flares were cut off about 1" outside of the body and as you can see in one of the pictures the outer part
flares stick under the body about 3/4" and that is what I riveted the inner fender to. Then cut the outer piece off in welded the flanges together.
I hope that helps. You need to remember that was over 4 years ago and I have slept and getting older.

great job. Seems like that could lead to a good technique to cut 4 door fenders for bigger tires, too.

Any idea who made those flares Jerry? That seems like a slam dunk to do. The flares could even be made removable using nutcerts.
