Roadtrip!!!!

Post by berettajeep »

Figured I would post this here. Next week I plan to drive 7.5 hours and 340 miles to pick up a motor for my CJ2A . I will be driving my Cherokee which I have not driven for more than an hour or 60 miles in a day. This will be my Roadkill adventure.

Thanks! I am really looking forward to this adventure. Probably end up bad but then I will have cool stories if I succeed!

I forsee you making it! The Jeep Gods, fickle as they are, always support getting more Jeep parts! Unless they don't, because, Jeep!

Hey - Good luck! I'm sure if you're like me, the back of the Cherk will have 800lb of spare parts, tools, fluids, prayer book, and a paddle. No wonder I get such poor mileage.

baling wire and duct tape.

In fact yesterday the headlamp ring of the moto failed, the zip ties worked the best for a long temporary fix....

Well I am back home after a 800 mile round trip. Full write up and pictures will be coming shortly after I go through all the photos my girlfriend took.

Also having problems with my computer at the moment, so I'll need to get it taken care of first.

Part 1

Dennis and Louise's roadtrip adventure starts off on Tuesday February 23rd 2016. We both had to work and I did not get home until 5:45PM PST. A quick bath and get clothes together and we are out the door and on our way by 6:30. Beginning mileage on my Cherokee is 63,254.7.

Drove about 20-25 miles when we stopped in a NAPA parts parking lot.

Image

I forgot to check the transmission level before we left... Level was good... on our way.

Image

Nothing to exciting, it was night time after all.

We decided to drive for about 3 hours and then get a room for the night. That ended up being in Newport, Oregon. Neither of us had dinner so we stopped at the Newport Cafe.

Image

Not the best but definitely not the worst burger and fries I've had.

After dinner we drove to our hotel, Holiday Inn. Purely by chance did I park next to another Cherokee.

Image

Time for sleep....

Part 2

February 24th 2016 Wednesday.

We woke up early and took a picture of the super comfortable bed.

Image

Ate our breakfast and off we go.

Few miles down the road we stopped at a store to get some supplies. I also need to get a new cigarette lighter, as the one in the Jeep was not charging anything. Took me way longer then it should have to install it I am embarrassed to say. After we had a working charger, we were on way. (again.)

4.5 hours later we reached Brookings Oregon. This is where the seller, Bryon, of the Jeep Engine lived.. Texting back and forth between Bryon to establish a good meeting time left us with about 45 minutes of free time. Lunch time!

Image

Superfly. Super delicious! Burger and fries was amazing!

With lunch over, we drove to Bryon's house. No photos of this because we were to busy talking and playing with his dogs. (Although Louise may have taken pictures with here phone, but she is at work at the moment)

Look over the motor and I am happy. From pictures he sent me before we drove down to get it and looking at it in his driveway, It is a "L" head Willys motor with a Ford "GPW" cylinder head on it. I could not read the numbers above the water pump the engine looked decent. We loaded it into the back of my Cherokee and then spend about 45 minutes looking at his CJ5 that this motor came out of.

Bryon's Jeep is a 1956 CJ5 that is torn down to piles of parts. It used to belong to his uncle, who drove it everyday. Bryon didn't know much of the history of it.

With daylight running out we said our goodbyes. Louise and I then headed south into California....

Part 3

Louise has never been to California before so this trip was to pick up my "new" Willys engine and while we were going to be so close, go see the Red Wood Forest.

A quick drive later we were driving on a dirt and sometimes muddy road.

Part 4

Fianlly back on paved roads, we see a little covered bridge that made no sense to us but here it is.

Image

About 2 minutes later here I am, annoyed that we are stopped on this road behind a truck and a UPS truck but unable to see what is going on.

Image

Sat there for about 20 minutes. We could have just turned around and drive through Red Woods again but it would have taken us a lot longer so we waited. Finally we were able to go and see what the fuss was about..

Image

Oh just rebuilding a bridge. lol.

Finally back to highway speeds!

Image

Now driving back home we decide to get a room in Coos Bay Oregon.

We stay at Best Western. Not nearly as nice as our previous hotel, and it was more expensive.

Part 5.

Thursday February 25th 2016.

We woke up to get an early start on our drive home. Also decided to stop and see some LightHouses that Louise wanted to see.

(Louise is at work and I don't remember the names of some of these)

First stop took us to this LightHouse.

Image

I am good at ruining photos. Let us try that again.

Image

Image

Who knew whales were such perverts!

Image

Me checking under the Cherokee

Image

Yep it is still there! lol.

After looking around for a few more minutes we left this light house and onto the next!

Driving North on 101 it became super foggy and of course right in the middle of it they are doing road construction. So there I am the last vehicle stopped in line, in the fog, just right over a small hill. I was just waiting to get rearended by someone flying over the hill.

Luckily traffic moved before that happened and a half mile or so we came to our next stop.

In some of the photos you can see the fog.

This also led to another Lighthouse.

Part 6

After the Lighthouse we continued Our Northern route and stopped a the Devil's Churn in Yachats Oregon.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Didn't stay long here. Small path we walked around. We could have gotten closer but Louise and I didn't want too.

Next stop, The Devil's Pucnh Bowl State Park in Otter Rock Oregon!

We then drove straight home.
