Differences between models

Post by srobertsfsj »

Does anyone know if there is a difference between J-truck front fenders and Cherokee WT front fenders?

I don't think so. Do you think AMC would have two different fenders for wide track trucks?

I have swapped them back and forth (77 WT to 78 J-10, and 79 J-10 to 77 WT)and if there's a difference, it didn't present itself to me. Every time I've swapped fenders I had issues with bolt holes being up to 1/8" off, but I think that's just manufacturing variance or the fenders adjusting themselves with the vehicle they're installed on over 30 years.

3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

Front fenders are identical as far as the actual flare shape and such goes. Only differences I know of is regarding the lights, which changed between some years, and possible holes for trim on some models that had the chrome strip.

The rear fender setup is very different however. The outer flare is the same, but the inner wheel well is 100% different.

Thanks guys, the reason I ask is there was some damage to the pass. side front fender in my accident and if the body shop can't fix it I will need to source a fender. I just wanted to see if I needed as certain year.

I swapped the outer W/T fenders from a 70's J truck onto my '88 waggy. They are like 99.9% the same.

The inner fenders do have some differences, although I believe they will interchange. I know the angle at which the battery tray mounts is different. I think they did that to make more room between the battery and A/C. Would be interesting to know what year they made that change.

I believe 79-80 was the battery change.

It had to be 79 for the change because my 78 wt's battery was on an angle and my 79 wt's is straight against the radiator support

My 83's at an angle...

Maybe a V8 vs I6 difference possibly?

All of mine for all years, 74-84 had slanted batteries to start with. I made them straight.

Edited to add picture and to remove a well intended yet very distasteful joke.

That could be, the 78 had a 401 in it and the 79 has a 258

Yeah I was just thinking, its the i6 vs V8 thing for me. My Cherokee (360) was at an angle, my J10 (i6) is straight.
