New guy introducing himself

Post by yjsquareguy »

Happy Thanksgiving. My name is Rob and I live in Jacksonville, FL. I have a 1995 YJ, a 2005 Grand Cherokee and my son wants a Grand Wagoneer. I will attempt to add a pick of the 1990 we are looking at. Not sure I will pull the trigger on this one due to a lot of rust. I am a good body guy but this is a project for sure.

I find the Chiefs and Grand Wagoneers beautiful vehicles. I drive my YJ every day and the Grand Wagoneer will be a weekend garage kept project.

Looking forward to reading and learning as much as I can about the Full Size Jeeps while I shop. I have made the space in the garage. I am not a great mechanic but I do love these vehicles and I want to own one soon.

Rob

Hey Rob, glad you found us. Image

We refer to another site ( http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/ ) as the "mother ship". There are several members in your area that might be able to help you find a nice one.

Good luck on the search.

Hey! We don't like "noobies" around here! Oh, wait. Yeah we do. Welcome! :)

Keep your eyes peeled and know that the right one will pick you, not the other way around. Or not. I don't know. Somehow these things just keep popping up in my driveway. Don't worry about flaming around here. Odd as it is for an internet forum, folks here are genuinely interested in seeing others succeed in their projects, rather than be the coolest toolbag on the interwebs. Because that's me. I'm the coolest toolbag on the interwebs and that's just generally understood so everyone else focuses on helping eachother. :P

Looking forward to seeing you and your future FSJ around! :-bd

Thank you all for the welcome. I am going to take the advice of the experts and search to find the machine that picks me. The one I looked at has seriois "Cancer" or rust. My son is bummed but at 14, he has time to search.

I look forward to learning a lot more!!! Have a great weekend

Welcome!!!!

Definitely skip the rusty ones. Too many nice ones still around. Don't be afraid to venture a bit north of you.
Not sure where the checklist is for buying a waggy but you may want to hunt it down as a reference in your searches. Hopefully someone will pop up a link for it.

Seems to be enough hits in your area to keep you busy for a few weekends.
Jacksonville:

I'd stay away from this thing in Tallahasse:
http://tallahassee.craigslist.org/cto/3380668373.html

Most of the mechanical issues you will come across are pretty typical for all vehicles that are 20-30 years old rigs.
Lack of maintenance, non-working electrical items (doors, windows, seats, etc.) and previous owner mod's.
Rust is fairly easy to spot on these, rear quarter panels and the frame area by gas tank/skid plate.
Most sellers won't want you pulling up the carpet below the front air vents. The cowl opening drains into the air vent area and becomes clogged with junk. This area then holds water and it will flow onto the floor by both the driver and passenger feet areas.
Poking around this area underneath with a screwdriver will usually reveal major rust through if it's that bad. There is going to be some, I've only torn down one rig that did not have at least some surface rust in those areas.

I have looked at most of the ones in the local area. Some are solid deals but I have to consider my time and space. I like doing body work but having rear window HOLES on both sides and more cancer in the driver side door frame is a lot to ask. One doesn't run. Needs a starter relay I am told. I am lucky to have an awesome Jeep mechanic in town. That makes me feel better about buying something that is hard to judge. I have a white one to see tomorrow. I will post up the pictures and some insight.

I see there are several in California and AZ. I am willing to fly out and drive one back if I can make the deal from Florida. Searching is half of the fun. Driving one of these machines to a Jeep club meeting, that is just awesome. :D

I looked at this one today from the year 1987. Is this rust too much or is it to be expected. The GW runs good and has new shoes. Could be a new addition to the garage and at a Show and shine near me soon. Thoughts? Input?

ng from this far at the pics it looks good, there may not be one that is perfect without a price. Eventhen you will have to put some time into it to make it your own. So I say if the task is within your capabilities.... get it! If not then you know what to do.
