How much does your battery cable spark when you connect it?

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

I'm finishing up the junkyard TBI wiring swap into the waggy.

Every Jeep I've ever had does this - the battery cable will have a minor 'spark' when connecting it to the battery. Everything is fused correctly and it's not blowing any fuses.

Is this normal?

Its normal for the most part. As far as I know its related to the ford solenoid. As my fords have also done it. Something is drawing some initial current when connected.

something is, or it wouldn't spark... If it's a big one your battery will go flat quick if left unstarted. If it's small it'll take while but will still happen. I prefer it when they don't spark at all!

I always thought it was the clock and under hood light, maybe it does have something to do with the ignition.

Cigarette lighter have something in it? Radio hooked direct? Amp? I know my J4000 would spark when I hooked it up, then it wouldn't spark again unless I let it sit overnight. It was the voltage regulator (Autolite style)

Clock, & radio if it has internal memory. Lights will only draw if they are on. You can check amperage draw between pos post and pos batt cable to find out how much is being drawn. If its concerning, start pulling fuses to isolate which circuit has the current draw and trace it from there.

Mine was caused by a short at the rear wiper plug.
