Buying a camper Truck

Post by Kaiserman »

From a fellow IFSJA member. Might be a member here as well. KJ Ryu. He's giving me a killer deal on the truck. it's so good I had to over look the problem of it being in Wyoming!

If things go as planned with the shipper I'm talking to it will be here on this month on the weekend of the 27th/28th.

It's titled as a 70 (I'm thinking it's more than likely a 69 build date). J3800 Z camper Truck. Buick 350/T18A. P/S, P/B and an AM radio. Non custom cab with the original white paint and amber interior. Runs and yard drives. Needs floors, rockers and some bed seam work. But it's almost rust free compared to what's around here. Just over 90K miles. Some one has swapped out the original intake and dizzy for a iron 4bbl/Q-jet and HEI.

Going to be a resto project for me. It's EXACTLY what I want in a FSJ truck. A J3800 with the Rhino grille, 350 and T18A.

I have the missing side mount carrier, tailgate (new take off) and radiator. As well as a Camper Truck specific sway bar.

My 71 may end up as a parts rig for it depending on what it needs. It's tempting to swap in my60K mile 350/T18A, Dodge D50 front, NOS fan shroud and my re-cored radiator. But I think the 71 will stay more or less together and I'll be selling the 6. I don't really have room for four vehicles (four including my Buick). But we will see, I may just keep everything.

It's also tempting to do this one u bone stock with no alterations.

Nice! Buick with a 4 speed!
I am under the impression that Jeep did not build of a lot of Buick powered J-Trucks backed by a manual.
Seems to me the nailhead TH400 is a more common combo.

It seems that way to me as well. Especially in a Camper Truck.

Looks like I won't be getting it anytime soon though. The guy I was going to have haul it turned out to be a total scammer. He called me from an ad I had on Yesterdays Tractor's hauling forum. I didn't know they had a feedback forum. Looks like he's ripped off A LOT of people.

Wow, NICE score! Wyoming probably still has a bunch of FSJs sitting around waiting for somebody to save them. The 69 Wag we parted a while back was a 350/3speed on the column. Those were probably much more common than the 4 speed though. Good Luck on the projects!

At one point. The entire carrier is missing off the truck, but I have one here for it from my 71 J2000.

By any chance would the truck make the drive out? Have you considered a drive away type shipment?

That is a nice find. What a great looking truck for its age. You never see trucks of that age around here in the North East. Good luck with it.

No, it's been off the road for years. Has no brakes and a radiator that looks like it came out of a first gen Honda civic.

I posted up on Pirate, and am going to do some calling around starting Monday to some independent carriers.

Probably the autos survived, as the manuals are usually beat into the ground. It appears Jeep made more manuals, but there are much fewer of them now

As far as I know the CJ radiator is smaller. Especially as this has the Buick motor, I'd have to rob a radiator from an early CJ with a Dauntless 225.

Looks like it's going to be picked up Tuesday or Wednesday for a grand total for $1330 shipped to my door.

I have a line on black buckets and Custom Cab door panels for it from a 70 or so Wagoneer. From a member on IFSJA.

Well the shipper is picking the truck up right now. Going to cost me another $100 though. He won't load it on his truck with no brakes (I told him jamming the T18 in gear was all the brakes it needed but he didn't care) so he's getting a flat bed load it onto his trailer.

What ever. I'm not going to cry about $100. He was actually very decent about it. Said it if it ran over $100 he'd eat the difference.
