Thanks! This is what I needed to see. I built my wagoneer to take cross country but have not bought a trailer yet. I guess I just need to feel rest assured it can do it.

Miltos68, you can always rent a travel trailer and make a few weekend test trips. Brake controller and weight distribution hitch are all you need. The Curt industries controller is my current state of the art controller. I would not go over 26 feet on the trailer. It's not a power concern it is the length of the tow vehicle . Weight distribution hitch is essential for or rigs. Unless you like 3ph up and down hill

Thanks cheap hobby! I think that is a GREAT idea to rent a trailer and test out. I need to work out all the gremlins residing in my jeep after the swap and 47 years of use first. So hopefully by this summer I will be ready to to give it a go.

Renting will also help you decide what lay out, equipment, trim level and size will work for you. We bought our 14' 1968 self contained Aristocrat because we knew it would tow great behind the Chero and nobody would want to hang out in it with us. It has worked great for 18 years. Now that we have 2 60 # dogs it can be a bit cramped. Oh well I can put in any size space we pick even when towing with the super duty.

So, I've got a question for you guys who tow with your FSJs. I've got a Jeep with the "High Altitude" setup, but no tow package. (As far as I can tell, that means I've got 3.31 gears but everything else is the same) I'm thinking about building a trailer hitch for my rig and getting a camper trailer eventually. Other than the hitch and associated power to run, is there anything else I should look at before towing with my '89?

You will need a trans cooler. I have a factory one hanging on the wall. You will also have to limit your trailer weight to under 5000 gross. Otherwise you will be going very slow up the hills around here. You will also need brakes on the trailer. They help a whole heck of a lot. As for a hitch, it is fairly easy to modify one from a 2000 Tahoe to fit. It just needs to be shortened and you have to be able to weld well.

As I recall, Wagoneers with the tow package were rated for towing 5000lbs, but anything over 2500 requires the trailer to have brakes. Which at the time was the old style push brakes. But these days equates to electric brakes. So you will want an adjustable brake controller. They make a HUGE difference. A load balancing setup helps too.

But if you will be towing a small popup or the like that is less than 2500lbs, brakes are really optional in most cases.

Thanks for the input, csuengr and Stuka. I've got a buddy that says I can have his trans cooler. I'll look into trailer brake systems as well.

Dr. Marn: I've always liked your Wagoneer/trailer combo.
