Transfer case oops

Post by sgtpoliteness »

So, I am a complete Jeep noob (but a long time mechanic and gear head). I picked up my first Jeep last weekend, a '77 Cherokee Chief S - 360, TH400, QT. Almost no rust! Hurray for Colorado.

Looking on CL for spare parts I came upon someone parting out an '80 Wagoneer. I asked if it was a QT, got an affirmative and agreed to purchase a low mileage transfer case. I picked it and got it in the trunk of my Jetta and drove home. Unloading it (you can all see where this is going) with a friend I discover that something looks off. Ah, the outputs for the diffs are offset. Oops. Doing some research I think this is a NP219 transfer case. Any thoughts on what something like this is worth? I didn't pay much for it, but I don't need it sitting around here getting in the way.

Nice to meet you all!!

Yeah, Jeep has used the quadra-trac name with a few different transfer cases. It is an NP219, which is a fine case. If its in good shape you should be able to find a buyer.

For reference you need to find a 74-79 quadra-trac (BW1338) t-case. I think some 73's came with them as well.

Stuka, thanks! Yeah, lesson learned. Any thoughts what I should ask for it? It's really clean (not too clean, like, lightly used clean) and the seller said it came out of a Wagoneer with ~80k miles.

The case is probably fine then. Drain the fluid and see how that looks, that will tell you more than anything.

If it is in good shape, you can at the very least re-coup your investment, possibly more. The NP219 is probably the hardest to find t/c used in FSJs.

The fluid is clean and doesn't smell burnt or anything. I didn't see any metal bits or shavings.

I paid $80 for it, so I'd like to get that out of it.

If it's that rare is there much need for them? Or is it one of those no one needs it until they NEED it situations?

I'd buy it if I were in Colorado at the moment. I bought a spare 229 that I was saving for an Eagle, but I gave it to someone that needed it right away. Once I get an Eagle a 2 speed case is going to be one of my first mods.

I got rid of it! Traded it to a fella for the correct QT t-case for my Cherokee.
