Hello and a couple of questions

Post by wedgetail »

Hi all,
just joined this as I saw the thread on IFSJ forum (which I can't seem to join...). Looks like some great jeeps around! I don't own one, but hope to fix that problem soon ;). When I was little my uncle had first a CJ10 he used for work (builder/carpenter) then an '89 cherokee grand. He also told me about J20s and I have always considered them the holy grail of vehicles. So looking to trade my HJ47 for one.

I have a couple of questions though. I have heard from several sources the J20 is rated for 2 tonnes payload, but in the US they seem to be rated at various different GVMs but nothing more than 1 1/4 tons, and mostly 3/4. How is it the aussie versions are up at 2 tonnes? Is it different suspension or just different rating laws?

Also, what was the standard rim size here? I heard someone say they had 16" rims (and 7.50x16 standard) but in the US they seem to be 16.5" rims. Were they two piece split rims from factory?

I know these aren't easy questions for most americans but I'm hoping there might be a real die hard FSJ guru that knows international stuff or an aussie member or two!

Just info gathering for when I finally find a J20 that I can afford... I had a lead on one but now it looks like either the owners can't decide whether they want to sell or they want too much for me (it's in much better knick than I thought) :(

AFAIK the US rating of 1/2 or 3/4 tons is not the max payload
My understanding is that the Aussie trucks were not different from the US ones except the RHD and some beds which were manufactured locally : the US J20 with a 8400 GVW got also a max payload near 2 tons

I know a few Ozzies and Kiwis from the AMC list and there isn't too much different other than the steering and reversal of the wiring harness. Postal FSJs here are pretty much the same as the Ozzy Jeeps.

I found that in a wikipedia article :
"Full-size pickups in North America are sold in four size ranges - ½ Ton, ¾ Ton, 1 Ton, and now 1½ ton. These size ranges originally indicated the maximum payload of the vehicle, however modern pickups can typically carry far more than that"
IMO originally means the fifties : some willys pickup were rated as 1 Ton, and i think it was indeed the max payload
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_tru ... m_payloads

IIRC there was an Aussie J20 that you won't find in the US though : it was a crewcab J20 , but only ten or twenty were produced..(there is a thread on the motherboard ;) )

1/2, 3/4, 1, 1.25, and so on are just class of vehicle these days. It really has no bearing on what they can actually haul.

wow, thanks guys I had no idea that the 1 1/4 ton name had no bearing to the load rating! Here when you say something is one tonne it can legally carry one tonne and no more...
So what about the tyre sizes? What was the stock size that came with the 16.5"? What was the size when they switched to 16" rims?

I am short of time to look for all the years :D
A few data (J20 US) that should help :
- 75 : std : 8x16.5, opt : 8.75x16.5, 9.5x16.5, 7.5x16
- 81,84 : std : 8.75x16.5, opt : 9.5x16.5 (std for the 8400 GVW)
- 86 : 9.5x16.5 (no option)
So i think that the 16 rims were available for the 70s only in the US

I have only one brochure about the Australian J20
It's from the 80s, don't have the exact year
Tyre : 7.5x16 (E range), rims 16''x6.5'', 8 studs
max gross vehicle mass : 3814kg
kerb weight : 1760kg (6cyl), 1891kg(8cyl) : i think it's without the bed , since the brcochure is about a "cab and chassis" J20
kerb weight includes full oil, water etc..
same axles and powertrain than in the US (axle ratio : 3.73) EXCEPT that the US J20 was not available with the 6 inline (J20s with the 6 were export only)
J10 81, J10 77, CJ7 80, Gladiator 64, Wagoneer 65, ZJ 5.9
parts vehicles : wagoneer 63, cherokee Golden eagle

Thanks that's a lot of good info. Shame to here we only got 3.73 axles though. And coupled with 9.5x16.5 wheels that's some really high gearing. Are my calculations wrong or is the rolling diameter of 9.5x16.5s 37"?
