I'm completing the 360/401 engine swap in the waggy. I was able to get it to start, but it runs like crap. Really, really bad. I wasn't able to see the timing mark when it was idling using the timing light.
I'm 90% sure I found TDC, but I suppose it's possible that it's 180 degrees out.

Will it run 180 out? badly?
If it runs at all, its not 180* out.
Double/triple check all the wires are in proper sequence.
You're probably just way off in timing. Manually turn or bump the engine until the timing mark is at 0*/TDC. Remove dizzy cap. Confirm that the rotor is aligned to where the #1 spark plug terminal is located when the cap is on. Leave the dizzy clamp loose enough to allow you to turn it when running and experiment with the dizzy position until it runs smoother. That should get you close enough to see the mark with a timing light. It also helps to chalk the groove on the harmonic balancer for better visibilty. And if THAT doesn't work, you have other problems, like maybe major vacuum leak.

could be completely wrong, but are your spark plug wires on correctly? When I did TFI I put mine one off all the way around. It fired a couple times while cranking but never started.

Nice! I remember when Orangecherokee was ticked because his wouldn't run at all because it was 180 out. Spun it and it fired right up. I'm glad to see stuff like this pop up becaue it keeps the infor flowing in my head. Working with elementary kids makes a lot of stuff disappear at an alarming rate.
Bingo! ...I removed the dizzy over one tooth, adjusted the wire position and she fired right up....[/quote]
Wait...I'm confused. How can you move over one tooth? It can only go in on way or 180* out, and then you can move wires.

The teeth will mesh in any direction. You can be any number of teeth off.

You sure about that? The dizzy gear is pinned to the shaft and the drive slot for the dizzy shaft is a "--" The dizzy will only mate with the drive slot 2 ways....Correct and 180 out.

You can turn that oil pump shaft by hand to be in any orientation. Especially if you primed the oil pump before hand.
