Sand tan? yes or no?

Post by nc wagoneer »

So, after decoding the paint code on my j20 it was originally sand tan. I saw an ad for a j truck recently in the same color and it got me thinking about how I discarded the idea of repainting it the original color. I'm thinking since the rockers and flares will be rhino liner black anyways I should paint the razor and front bumper flat black as well as the rims since the flatbed is allready black. The rest of the truck in a color close to sand tan but more of a flat color. Opinions??? I think this will be better than the rattle can flat black I planned since I'll be swapping a lot of body panels to get rid of rust. Any lore pics of sand tan fsjs???
here's a pic of my truck to imagine how it would look, needa learn to photshop one of these days

Sand tan looks pretty good for awhile untill it looses it's gloss and chalks out. Then it just looks like a big band-aid.

It's like that nice pink that was popular in the 1950's that turns into Pepto-bismol.

Maybee if you did it in modern pain it would hold up better. The old laquer and enamel paints chalk out fast if they're not continuously waxed.

How about that nice avocado color or gold that everyone's mom's refrigerator was in the 70's? AMC had "Butterscotch Gold" in the early 70's that can best be described as "The great pumpkin". It's kinda nice, though.

I personally like FSJ's in a nice blue metallic or copper color.

if you want to be super cheap, rust oleum has a sand tan in quarts or rattle. its real close to the original paint on my 78 i used the rattle can to touch some stuff up. id go with the quart of oil base. you can buy a cheap HF spray gun and spray it, or google how to roller paint a car with rust oleum. its a funky technique but it can come out looking really good. ive seen some hot rods done with the roller that looked real slick. its not the best paint, it wont last forever but it will look decent and will probably cost under 100$. when it chalks up or you scratch it up, you can scuff it up and throw another coat on it.

Are you building a driver or a wheeler? Are you gonna dump the dump box and build a flatbed?
