Wire it up!

Post by PlasticMastodon »

I'm looking at the universal wiring harnesses over at BJ's.

Has anyone used the 21-circuit kit? Does it replace everything from the tailgate motor and defroster to headlights? Or am I missing something?

It does not.
Just to make sure nobody takes what I say wrong, it's a good kit and worth the price. You can't buy the amount and variety of colors, sizes and lengths of wire in this harness in bulk for what you pay for it in this harness.

That said, it's definitely NOT a complete, plug-and-play harness. It's a fuse block with fuses and 21 labeled wire (circuits) coming out of it. I spent more on weatherpack connectors for this wiring harness than I spent on the harness. Totally worth it, but it's still a major project with lots of things for you to figure out on your own.

Chevy style HEI (ECM controlled)
Dolphin "Shark" gauges in a fancy homemade oak bezel
3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

So, worth the purchase?

Definitely worth the purchase, but not a single-weekend project for sure. Once you have it in hand and start comparing what the new harness provides to what's already in the truck, I'll give you an idea of all the different additional things you need to install it.

I don't know what year you have, but Z&M makes harnesses that have 95% of the original connectors (and include weatherpak connectors where they don't). Spendy but well made.

If you go this route, make sure the harness matches the old one before digging in.
