Overdrive gear selector?

Post by Bearded_Dragon »

Hello everybody!

So looking into J10/J20 trucks and have been unable to find the answer to this question. I'm looking at an 83 J10 auto and the owner states its a 727. From my research on here all 727 are 3-speeds without overdrive, why does the gear selector show overdrive? Was this just a screw-up from the factory? I've attached a picture if it helps.

Uh... not sure where you’re seeing OD?

P-park
R-reverse
N-neutral
D-drive
2-holds in second
1-holds in first.

I've attached a larger picture, it's most definitely overdrive since there's a circle going around D. Other's I've seen are solid white, such as https://www.teamgrandwagoneer.com/gear- ... 1986-1991/

Very possible it came from a different vehicle. I looked for Cherokee and Grand Wagoneers but they all say Park instead of P.

I’d guess a CJ since my 83 scrambler is a similar blue color, they offered autos (rare), and it should have been a bolt on. Of course it could have been any amc with a blue interior.

My Cherokee 82 selector looks exactly the same as Bearded Dragons. I never noticed the difference in the font for the D. The 727 did not have an overdrive. Some years did have locking torque converters. If there was a 4th gear you would be able to hear/feel it shift into OD.

Welcome to the forum! I hope you are enjoying your J10.

I don't see a circle around it. I see a "D" in an outline text rather than solid.

Yeah, on mine it is more of an outline than a circle for sure.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I don't have an FSJ yet, just doing reconnaissance at the moment.

All the columns from 73 to 86 have that same gear indicator i believe. My 83 did. The pictures of the ones that spell out park are from the 1986+ jeeps which had a different column

Werent there rumers of late model grand wagoneers being 4 speed on the 727 ? I heard sbout it. But didnt think it existed..

If its actuzlly got overdrive a really easy way to tell would be to get a picture of the transmission itself... if it has overdrive itll have a msybe 6 or 7 inch long unit bolted to the back of the transmission itself and the transfercase bolted to that.

But i doubt it has overdrive lol.. and i dont think any late model 90 or 91s had it either. Thr onky thing they changed were the torque convertors to lockup convertors in the later years
