NP229 4WD light

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

How is the 4WD light on the GW's with the NP229 triggered? Some diagrams show a stand-alone sensor plugged to vacuum and the other diagrams do not.

I don't see a stud on the transfercase like the 208 has?

Until 1986 three was no shift light on the np229. The 1986 and later ones have a electric shift switch on the bottom

Just looked at my case. It does have the electric switch on the bottom. Pigtail looks like a 2 prong deal similar to a GM coolant temp sensor.

Your tcase was probably replaced at some point or the manuals are wrong because there's no switch on the tcase diagrams until 1986. My 83 had this too, but no wiring at all for a light. It's not hard to add the wiring though. The plug is a 2 prong male weatherpac connector, but with the male terminals inside instead of the standard female ones. As far as I know you can't find it anywhere, but it's easy to make. If your switch is bad Chrysler dealerships should still be able to get one but it's not cheap.

It's definitely been replaced and rebuilt. There is a rebuilt tag on the case and the case was in my '86 instead of the 228 that should have been there.

It's super easy to wire up the light. I did it on my original dash before I swapped in the 1986 dash I have now. On the back of the instrument cluster you actually have a separate pigtail for the 4x4 indicator which has a power and a ground. The power is constant and the ground circuit is completed through the switch. The wiring should go through the firewall on the same part of the harness as the neutral safety switch harness. It's an orange wire I believe. The wiring diagram for your year will be of help
