Trans oil change

Post by Saul32 »

I have an 88 Grand Wagoneer and was wondering if it is ok to do a transmission oil and filter change in it. I was always told not to bother on cars this old because it would ruin the trans. The guy at Autozone recently told me not to change it or I would mess up the trans and I was wondering if that is true or not?
I just don't understand why it would
Also, what oil do you use when you change out your trans oil? any preferred brand?

Bogus. Change the oil and the filter. Funny, I was just talking with my mechanic and he was talking about trans fluid flushes and how he used to be afraid of them, too. But now he knows the benefits of them.

While you're at it, get the MOPAR reusable gasket. It's supposed to be better than the OE rubber that is probably on there now.

You'll just use the regular Dexron stuff. They're up to Dexron VI or something like that, but you don't need the expensive stuff. Dex III equivalent will do fine. Just regular ATF. Just not Ford type.

Yeah, that's a good gasket!

I use Dexron/Mercon High-Mileage ATF

While you have the pan off, disconnect both tranny cooler lines at the tranny, take a piece of 3/8s hose, slip it over the end of one tube and the other end of the hose into a 5 gal. bucket, WITH A SHIRT OVER THE BUCKET, and blow through the other tranny line with compressed air. Reassemble. ;)

Someone NOT telling you to change the fluid is ridiculous. Those power flushes is what you don't want to do, but that's only on marginal transmissions.

I take off the pump trans linesand let the trans pump fluid into it a couple quarts at a time. Then top off, then pump some more. Do this until you've pumped through the capacity.

You can also use a can of Kooler Flush to blow through the lines and cooler.

While you're at it, buy and install the B&M Universal Drain Plug Kit, P/N 80250. It's everything you want in a project on these rigs but almost never get: quick, easy, and cheap. Makes the next fluid change much cleaner, which also makes you more likely to do it, which will prolong tranny life.

And x2 on the reusable gasket. I had to go to the Jeep dealer to get mine, but it was worth it.

My Jeep has tricked me into thinking I know what I'm doing.

Thanks guys. I always thought that was some funny advice about not changing it.

I just changed mine to Mobil 1, 135,000 miles, new filter gaskets and adjustments as indicated and wow! Its like a new tranny in there, shifts smooth as silk, you won't be sorry. It holds a lot of tranny fluid, and luckily we got most of the old fluid out of it. These were good tranny's.
