Pulled the trigger today, her she is

Post by wewillsurvive »

Well after a 2 hour drive north and then a 2 hour drive home I am now the proud owner of a FSJ. I bought the 1986 Grand Wagoneer I was looking at. I had also looked at a 79 and was supposed to go look at another 79 tomorrow.

This is what I know it has an AMC 360 with headers, aluminum intake, Holley "Double Pumper" (his words, I'll check that tomorrow), it is supposed to be a Jasper rebuild with at least 3-5k on it probably a bit more because he got it from the guy that put the motor in. They claim it had 38's on it... I don't see how but that's the claim. Frame is solid, floors are not rotten all the windows work. Needs a tailgate window switch and key or maybe a key I can't get the ignition key to fit so I presume it isn't that one. It wanders a little and has had a new steering box and tie rod on drivers side, would a steering stabilizer help this(it isn't horrible, not like driving a Ramcharger with junk steering)? 4WD works, but I don't know enough about it to know if it all works, I moved the switch to the 4WD from 2WD and lifted the lever by seat and it went it to low and "crawled" I presume high range is just leaving it where it was at the floor?

Is there anyway to put shoulder belts in the rear? I am considering 5 point harnesses if not, kids (8 & 5) need to be safe.

Looks pretty good to me! I'd wheel it. :-bd

If the drive train is stock, it would have a 727 tranny with NP228 transfer case. When the flag shifter is not in 4wd Low, it is either in nuetral or high range. NP228 has open differential in 4wd High and is locked in 4 Low. Axles would be D44 front and AMC 20 rear. Rear could be D44 as 86 production year a cross over for rear axle.

Have fun with it! :fsj:

It has the 44 rear. So when driving can I leave the switch in 2WD and the stick in Neutral or does it need to be in high? I guess I'm going to have to read up on the 228 TC.

Thanks, that looks like it will work. If all else fails I'll put a four point cage in the rear and use the 5 points from my Demon (they need to be replaced since they are expired anyway).
