Seat bracket changed from 79 to 87? Are wagoneers are Cherokees the same?

Post by will e »

I picked up an after market driver seat bracket for 'Grand Wagoneer 79-87'. I went to install it in my 82 Cherokee and it's close but no cigar. It's almost like they mixed up which side the front supports should be on. Are there differences in the Wagoneer and Cherokee floors for these years? Did the seat brackets change?

In 1980 when they switched front axle to LH diff, the floor shape was changed to accommodate the New process tcases. 80-91 have different bucket seat brackets than 79 and earlier. Cherokees and Wagoneers had the same floor pans.

Well, I got it to work. Just the door side on the front was too short. A coupler and stud from the hardware store and I was in business.
The seat is nice an tight now. Not even a hint of wobble. And it goes back a bit further too, so bonus.

Wierd, I grabbed some mounts from an 85ish wagoneer and tossed em in my 77 with no issue. Now they're in my 83.

So here's a question related to this. Can you put 80 and later bucket seats onto 79 frames? Also, did the drivers bucket ever tilt forward in 2 door Cherokee Chiefs?

Thanks for any info.
1979 Cherokee Chief S, V8, MSD Pro Billet Distributor with New Factory Ignition Box (are these 2 even supposed to work together?), HEI Wires, Edelbrock 1406, Edelbrock Performer manifold, 3.54 gears, Tru-Trac Locker in the rear, Turbo 400, New Quadratrac, Dual gas tanks, new 32 x 11.50's, Big 9000 winch, Homemade 2.5" full length exhaust, Custom Headlight Harness, Custom front bumper working, Custom Rear Swing-out Bumper, Class V receiver hitch ... and a lot of work to do yet. :)

I went the opposite direction. I bolted 70's Cherokee seats to 80's power seat bases. They work just fine that way. When everything was apart, I measured the holes in the seats and they were the same distance apart for both the 70's and 80's seats so I would expect the 80's seats on 70's frames would work fine.
