Ammeter Bypass Help

Post by superdave »

Well I was all set to do the ammeter bypass this weekend, but after looking under the hood, I have more questions than answers. Looks like somebody already did something down there, not sure what.

The good news is I found the red wire coming off the alternator into the loom that makes it's way to the bulkhead. I also found the yellow wire that comes off the starter solenoid (bat side) and goes into the loom and to the bulkhead. There I'm good.

My question has to do with the other wires coming off the same terminal on the alternator. In addition to the red wire that goes into the loom, there's a second red wire, same size, coming off the same terminal on the alternator, going into a little black cylinder, and then going to the other post on the alternator. What's this guy?

There's also a green and purple wire. The green wire is attached to the same post on the alternator, then loops back to the other post (or something else immediately under, hard to tell if it's a different connection or spliced in). The purple wire comes off the post with the red wires and goes to a little cylinder thing just above the oil filter. What's this?

My real question is if I just ignore this other stuff and leave it all as is and continue taking the single red wire off the alternator and connecting to solenoid with fusible link as planned or do I need to clean some of this stuff up? Will post pictures from phone in a second...

Here's the cylinder by the oil filter that the purple wire goes to (where my pencil is pointing):Image

And straight down from there you can see the black cylinder that the mysterious second red wire goes into, with a black wire coming out the other side and going to and the other alternator post, as well as a ground wire.

Picture?

Could be the little cylinders are condensers (capacitors) that are there to eliminate radio frequency (rf) noise. Example - https://www.ebay.com/itm/RADIO-NOISE-CA ... itor&rt=nc They usually have a clamp around them.

Oh - that's the oil pressure sensor. Has nothing to do with the alternator. Just because the wire comes out of the harness in that location does not mean it's connected to the alternator.

Look at the diagram here - http://oljeep.com/gw/elec/77/W-07a.gif - you'll see the purple wire.

Thanks for the quick response! Ok, green and purple are just bundled up with the rest there to tidy it up, and it sounds like the red loop with the black cylinder is the condenser/capacitor, so just leave that alone and proceed with the one red wire I was originally concerned with?

I know how I did this for my trucks, but I'm not sure who's instructions you are following. This is what I did:

Thanks again for your help. I got it sorted out and done this afternoon. I'm having a hard time finding links on this computer, but I followed a thread merrill posted following a writeup from arachnid on the other site. Once I sorted out what I had in front of me it was pretty quick and easy. Thanks!
