Got my 1984 Grand Wagoneer. Driving it to Montana. We stopped at a rest stop and noticed a little smoke from under the hood- none while driving, only when car was off. Popped the hood and every minute or so a little bit of smoke would come from the valve cover area by the dipstick. Pulled the stick to check oil (fine level) and a little smoke came out of there too. Started the car up and there's no smoke.
Any thoughts on what this could be? Safe to drive the next hour to a town?
Sounds like you have moisture in the oil if it’s coming out the dip stick hole. The smoke is most likely steam. Keep an eye on you oil and coolant. And your engine temps. Not much you can do short term. It could be very small head gasket leak or something. But just stay attentive to it.
Byproduct of gasoline burning is water... gasoline can get into the oil and so will blowby... every car ive worked on when hot and removing the oil cap on the manifold has some sort of steam or smoke coming out... not alot but itll always be there.
